Job Description
The position involves leading ecological restoration projects, conducting field surveys, monitoring conservation sites, and providing scientific expertise to support environmental restoration and mitigation efforts along the West Coast, with opportunities for mentorship, research, and professional development.
Key Responsibilities
- Support ecological restoration projects through scientific expertise, field leadership, and mentoring
- Oversee monitoring and maintenance of conservation and mitigation banks, including species-specific monitoring requirements
- Conduct field activities such as rare plant and wildlife surveys, wetland delineations, and data collection
- Lead and train field teams in sampling protocols, safety procedures, and data collection methods
- Operate and maintain scientific equipment to ensure accurate data collection
- Review and interpret technical documentation, including monitoring plans and maps
- Manage and analyze large datasets, ensuring data quality and accuracy
- Write technical reports and contribute to project documentation with minimal revisions
- Evaluate sites for regulatory and technical requirements, perform risk analyses, and inform project strategies
- Collaborate with project teams, clients, and stakeholders on project design, scheduling, and site assessments
Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree in natural or physical sciences is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
- Five years of relevant experience is required, or three years of relevant experience with an advanced degree.
- Advanced knowledge in at least one scientific discipline such as ecology, conservation, hydrology, flora, or fauna.
- Intermediate knowledge across several related scientific disciplines.
- Experience with scientific analysis software.
- Proficiency in functional assessment methodologies and calculations.
- Hands-on field experience with equipment such as YSI multimeters, turbidimeters, and GPS.
- Experience in conducting rare plant and wildlife surveys and wetland delineations.
- Experience overseeing monitoring and maintenance of conservation and mitigation banks, including sites supporting federally and state-listed threatened and endangered plant and wildlife species.
- Ability to operate and maintain scientific equipment and field tools safely and effectively.
- Ability to review and interpret technical documentation such as standard operating procedures, monitoring plans, maps, and laboratory results.
- Experience collecting, managing, and analyzing large datasets with rigorous quality control to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Ability to write advanced technical reports with minimal revisions required.
- Experience mentoring junior staff and training field teams on technical methods.
- Experience collaborating with landowners, grazers, subcontractors, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to evaluate sites to identify regulatory and technical requirements, perform risk analyses, and provide insights to inform project strategies.
- Proficiency in functional assessment methodologies and calculations.
- Ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Physical ability to work outdoors in various habitats, including working onsite at least three days per week in Sacramento, CA, with regular travel and occasional overnight stays.
- Willingness to be adaptable and responsive in a dynamic work environment where schedules, site locations, and tasks can shift based on project needs.
Benefits & Perks
Salary range of $82,600 to $101,000 USD
