Job Description
A temporary full-time role operating autonomous test vehicles, involving manual and autonomous driving, data collection, troubleshooting, vehicle maintenance, and public engagement to support the development and deployment of self-driving technology.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate autonomous test vehicles in manual and autonomous modes under various traffic conditions while ensuring safety and adherence to driving procedures
- Collect data using proprietary software during real-world vehicle operations and provide feedback to engineering teams
- Troubleshoot operational issues in real-time and collaborate with dispatch to resolve problems quickly
- Perform daily vehicle inspections and basic maintenance tasks such as cleaning and tire inflation
- Interact with the public to educate them about autonomous vehicle technology and behaviors
- Conduct high-profile ridealongs for company leadership and stakeholders, maintaining professionalism and safety
- Monitor onboard safety and navigational systems, maintaining situational awareness and safety protocols
Requirements
- Possession of a current valid California driver’s license and having been in possession of a US license for at least 3 years
- Ability to reliably work 5 days a week on one of the following shifts: Morning 6:00am-2:30pm PT (Tue - Sat or Sun - Thu), Afternoon/Evening 2:00pm-10:30pm PT (Tue - Sat or Sun - Thu), or Overnight 10:00pm-6:30am PT (Wed - Sun)
- Ability to operate a vehicle in manual and autonomous mode for up to 8 hours per day in diverse traffic conditions while adhering to safety and operational driving procedures
- Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug test
- Ability to perform daily vehicle inspection checks before and after missions
- Ability to perform basic vehicle maintenance tasks, including washing vehicles and putting air in tires
- Ability to troubleshoot operational issues in real time and collaborate with Mission Operations dispatch team to resolve issues and meet mileage collection targets
- Ability to occasionally interact with members of the public to educate them on autonomous vehicle technologies and behaviors
- Ability to serve as a company ambassador by safely and confidently conducting high-profile ridealongs for senior leadership, stakeholders, investors, and engineers, balancing safe operations with professional communication
- Ability to monitor onboard safety and navigational systems while maintaining constant situational awareness and adherence to safety protocols
- Physical ability to sit for 3 to 4 hours at a time in an enclosed vehicle for up to 8 hours per day, with the capacity to bend, squatting, stretching, and lift up to 25 pounds regularly
- Physical ability to perform side and up/down movement of the head, neck, back, and shoulders necessary to operate a vehicle safely
- Physical ability to operate foot pedals and hold/grasp with hands during vehicle operation
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to communicate comfortably through online collaboration platforms such as Slack and Google Meet
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to remain calm and resourceful under pressure to troubleshoot operational issues
- Strong collaboration and time management skills, with the ability to work independently or in small groups without direct supervision
- Self-driven, goal-oriented, and adaptable to frequent changes and evolving conditions
- Proven record of reliability, punctuality, and consistent attendance
