Job Description
The Autonomous Vehicle Operator role involves operating and testing autonomous vehicles, collecting data, troubleshooting issues, performing vehicle inspections, and occasionally engaging with the public and company leadership to support the development and deployment of self-driving technology.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate autonomous test vehicles in manual and autonomous modes under various traffic conditions
- Collect and provide detailed feedback on vehicle performance and software behavior to engineering teams
- Troubleshoot operational issues in real-time and collaborate with dispatch to resolve them
- Perform daily vehicle inspections and basic maintenance tasks
- Educate the public about autonomous vehicle technology and behaviors
- Conduct high-profile ridealongs for company leadership and stakeholders while ensuring safety and professionalism
- Monitor onboard safety and navigational systems to maintain situational awareness and safety protocols
Requirements
- Possess a current valid California driver’s license and have been in possession of a US license for at least 3 years.
- Have a clean driving record and be able to pass a criminal background check and drug test.
- Be able to reliably work 5 days a week on one of the following shifts: Morning 6:00am-2:30pm PT (Tuesday to Saturday or Sunday to Thursday), Afternoon/Evening 2:00pm-10:30pm PT (Tuesday to Saturday or Sunday to Thursday), or Overnight 10:00pm-6:30am PT (Wednesday to Sunday).
- Operate a vehicle in both manual and autonomous mode for up to 8 hours per day in diverse traffic conditions while adhering to proper safety and operational driving procedures.
- Utilize proprietary ground-breaking software to collect data in real-world situations and provide detailed and accurate feedback to engineers.
- Troubleshoot operational issues in real time and collaborate with Mission Operations dispatch team to resolve issues quickly and meet mileage collection targets.
- Conduct daily vehicle inspection checks before and after missions.
- Perform basic vehicle maintenance tasks, including washing vehicles and putting air in tires.
- Interact with members of the public to educate them on autonomous vehicle technologies and behaviors as needed.
- Safely and confidently conduct high-profile ridealongs for senior leadership, including CEO, President, VPs, major stakeholders, investors, and engineers.
- Monitor onboard safety and navigational systems continuously, maintaining situational awareness and adherence to safety protocols while driving.
- Be able to sit for 3 to 4 hours at a time for up to 8 hours per day in an enclosed vehicle, with the ability to perform bending, squatting, stretching, and lifting up to 25 pounds regularly.
- Demonstrate strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and be comfortable using online collaboration platforms such as Slack and Google Meet.
- Operate standard field equipment including laptops, tablets, and smartphones for documentation, training, and real-time workflow procedures.
- Exhibit strong problem-solving skills by remaining calm and resourceful under pressure to troubleshoot operational issues.
- Show strong collaboration and time management skills, with the ability to work independently or in small groups without direct supervision.
- Be self-driven, goal-oriented, and adaptable to frequent changes and evolving conditions.
- Demonstrate a proven record of reliability, punctuality, and consistent attendance.
- Be physically capable of sitting for extended periods, bending, squatting, stretching, and lifting up to 25 pounds regularly while working in a vehicle.
- Work in conditions that may involve sudden braking, swerving, slowing, or stopping of the vehicle, requiring the ability to operate safely under such circumstances.
