Job Description
The Controls Engineer is responsible for leading the development, integration, testing, and maintenance of control systems for utility-scale energy storage projects, ensuring compliance with grid requirements and supporting product development and commissioning activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive the realization of project-specific requirements related to controls, application modes, and grid integration.
- Integrate the Fluence BESS control system into TSO EMS systems and develop control logic for remote and local operation.
- Collaborate with field engineers to troubleshoot and resolve issues during commissioning and testing.
- Support product development through the creation, implementation, and testing of controls applications.
- Develop and execute standardized test procedures to reduce commissioning time and evaluate prototype systems.
- Coordinate with clients and subcontractors to ensure controls compliance and support project phases.
- Maintain documentation of controls infrastructure, including hardware, protocols, and communication links.
- Stay current with company products, industry developments, and control network updates.
- Manage change control procedures and documentation rigorously.
- Implement industry best practices and technological updates to provide top-tier controls services.
- Report on project progress and controls performance to company leadership.
- Develop performance metrics and feedback mechanisms for controls support teams.
- Ensure safety standards are met during project execution.
- Lead and provide example-based leadership within project and engineering teams.
- Adapt project plans dynamically to meet changing requirements.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer industrial engineering with focus on automation and controls or equivalent.
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant Controls Software programming experience with a power utility or related industry and the design, operation, and maintenance of a power plant.
- Extensive knowledge in the electricity transmission distribution sector and EMS systems, including grid code and requirements analysis, development, and testing of algorithms for grid services applications.
- Extensive knowledge in SCADA protocols IEC60870-5-101, 103, 104, IEC 61850 MMS, DNP3, Modbus TCP/IP, PLC, Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), SEL Real Time Automation Controller (RTAC), SEL Relays, Meters, Siemens Relays, Meters, SCADA Gateways, and Data Concentrators.
- Experience in Linux-based systems and commands.
- High-level programming skills in languages such as Python and shell bash scripting, with experience using Github.
- Experience in MathWorks Simulink for model-based systems engineering, and proficiency in C and C++ programming languages.
- Experience in the design, operation, and maintenance of high voltage electrical equipment including inverters, transformers, I/O racks, telecommunications, and controllers.
- Solution-oriented mindset.
- Good communication skills.
- Fluency in English.
- Required certificates include Fluence safety trainings and, if applicable, an international travel health certificate for critical countries.
