Job Description

The Discipline Lead Group Manager oversees and develops a team of engineers and technicians in roadway and utility design, providing technical guidance, managing project delivery, and driving business growth within a collaborative, employee-owned engineering firm.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coach, mentor, and develop a team of engineers and technicians
  • Assess team capabilities and assign project tasks accordingly
  • Review work to ensure compliance with standards and QA/QC processes
  • Identify and expand roadway and utility design coordination capabilities
  • Contribute to client engagement, stakeholder relations, and business development
  • Provide technical guidance and insight throughout project lifecycles
  • Lead or assume project manager responsibilities for strategic and high-profile projects
  • Assist in proposal development and participate in qualifications presentations and interviews

Requirements

  • Reside within a regular commuting distance of the MSP Bloomington, MN location.
  • Experience in guiding and developing a team of engineers and technicians, including coaching, mentoring, and outlining development plans for team members to further their professional growth.
  • Ability to assess team capabilities and capacity against project scope and overall deliverables to assemble project teams, delegate applicable design tasks, review work in accordance with applicable standards and QA QC processes, and oversee deliverable progress in relation to submittal schedules.
  • Proven technical expertise in roadway design and utility design, with the ability to provide technical guidance and insight to project teams and project managers throughout the full lifecycle of a project.
  • Experience in leading or assuming project manager responsibilities for strategic and high-profile projects as necessary.
  • Ability to assist with proposal development for project pursuits by providing input on team capabilities and capacities in relation to project scope and anticipated delivery commitments.
  • Participation in qualifications presentations and project interviews.
  • Experience in collaborating with other group managers within a Surface Transportation team, including highway, bridge, traffic, transportation planning, and water resources, to advance services and enhance reputation.
  • Experience in client engagement, developing plans, cultivating and maintaining stakeholder relations, tracking prospective opportunities, leading proposals, and delivering qualifications presentations.
  • Ability to partner with various representatives throughout the organization to outline and implement market and sector development strategies to generate or enhance awareness and recognition of service offerings and capabilities across current, emerging, and prospective markets.
  • Experience in managing registered professionals and direct management of a Team Lead Assistant Group Manager who manages emerging unregistered engineers, designers, and technicians.
  • Strong understanding of design practices and standards, with the ability to coach team members on addressing design challenges and navigating discipline coordination efforts.
  • Experience in reviewing work in accordance with applicable standards and QA QC processes.
  • Experience in overseeing deliverable progress in relation to project schedules.
  • Ability to identify, advocate for, develop, and expand roadway design and utility design coordination capabilities for the team.
  • Experience in providing technical guidance and insight throughout the full lifecycle of a project as a technical expert.
  • Ability to assume project management responsibilities for strategic and high-profile projects when necessary.
  • Experience in participating in proposal development for project pursuits, including providing input on team capabilities and capacities, and participating in qualifications presentations and project interviews.
  • Educational background or professional experience sufficient to qualify as a senior highway design engineer and group manager (implying a relevant degree and professional licensure, such as a registered engineer).
