Job Description

A product development engineer at Solid Power will work on developing and scaling solid electrolyte materials for all solid-state batteries, collaborating across R&D, production, and engineering teams to optimize formulations, conduct experiments, and support transition to mass production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Optimize separator and electrode formulations, and slurry processing methods.
  • Screen formulations on benchtop and pilot scale with operations team.
  • Drive new product platforms through slurry formulation design and scientific research.
  • Source, characterize, and evaluate materials from suppliers.
  • Plan and execute DOE experiments, analyze results using statistical tools.
  • Conduct hands-on laboratory experiments to support research and development.
  • Contribute to technical writing of grants, patents, and reports.
  • Collaborate effectively with R&D, production, and engineering teams.
  • Communicate technical ideas, procedures, and results clearly to team members.
  • Source equipment, materials, and instruments, justifying expenditures.
  • Maintain lab safety and cleanliness during research activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) or Master's degree (M.S.) in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Basic knowledge of the field's standards and specifications, including an applied understanding of wetting and dispersion science.
  • Application of basic chemistry techniques to optimize manufacturing processes, especially knowledge of solvent selection and material compatibility.
  • Exposure to chemical and physical characterization techniques, such as rheology, SEM, EDS, Raman spectroscopy, XRD, and particle size determination.
  • Self-motivated and able to work with little supervision.
  • Experience handling hazardous materials in a laboratory or production environment.
  • Proficiency in planning and executing Design of Experiments (DOE), utilizing statistical tools for results analysis, and determining the importance of multiple factors parameters.
  • Experience in sourcing, characterizing, and evaluating materials from various suppliers.
  • Ability to optimize separator and electrode formulations, and slurry processing methods through benchtop screening and pilot scale work.
  • Experience with small scale mixing and benchtop prototyping using rotational mixers such as Flacktek or Thinky (preferred).
  • Experience with chemical and physical characterization techniques relevant to materials science and battery development.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently to reach goals within target timelines.
  • Experience in technical writing of grants, patents, and reports.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly disseminate procedures and work instructions to operators and technicians.
  • Physical ability to perform prolonged periods of sitting at a desk.
  • Wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as eye protection, hair net, gloves, face mask, coveralls, full-face respirator, or PAPR as necessary.
