Job Description
The Battery Product Engineer at Sila is responsible for designing, testing, and analyzing high-performance battery prototypes, translating complex data into insights, and collaborating across teams to advance next-generation battery materials for emerging markets.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and test high-performance battery prototypes to validate Sila's material against customer requirements and market use cases.
- Analyze electrochemical data to assess cell performance and determine technical feasibility.
- Serve as the primary technical interface for external customers, translating challenges into R&D experiments and sharing results.
- Collaborate across teams to ensure lab successes are scalable and aligned with market opportunities.
- Develop and execute experimental plans to explore material capabilities and identify technical advantages and limitations.
- Contribute to the product roadmap by translating lab results into market-ready solutions.
Requirements
- A strong technical background in lithium-ion batteries, including familiarity with cell design, electrode fabrication, and electrochemical trade-offs such as energy versus power versus cycle life inherent in advanced anode materials.
- Ability to carefully plan, implement, and pivot multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced R D environment.
- At least a M.S. in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field with 5 years of experience in the battery industry, or an advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) with significant research experience that may require fewer years of industry experience.
- Proficiency in analyzing complex electrochemical datasets including cycle life, swelling, and rate capability to identify technical and commercial viability.
- Experience in executing the Bench-to-Market Loop by designing, building, and testing high-performance cell prototypes (stacked, pouch, cylindrical) to validate Sila’s material against customer requirements and emerging market use cases.
- Experience acting as the primary technical interface for external customers, synthesizing their challenges into R D experiments, and sharing results that clarify the product’s value proposition.
- Ability to facilitate cross-functional collaboration between R D, Operations, and Business Development to ensure lab-level wins are scalable and aligned with long-term market opportunities.
- Ability to create and carry out rigorous experimental plans to explore the boundaries of Sila’s material, proactively identifying advantages and limitations in new applications.
- Deep understanding of lab safety best practices and hands-on experience working in a battery prototyping environment such as glovebox or dry room.
- Experience taking products from lab-scale validation to market-ready prototypes (the There-There Instinct) is a strong plus.
- Exceptional communication skills to translate complex electrochemical results into clear, data-rich narratives for internal teams and external customers.
- Customer-facing experience working with customers or partners to understand technical pain points and define success metrics.
- Physical ability to wear personal protective equipment including lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and steel toe safety shoes, operate a computer and office equipment, move long distances, and be stationary for extended periods.
- Ability to pass a respirator fit test and wear respiratory protection as needed.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 20% as needed.
Benefits & Perks
Compensation/salary range: $151,000 to $191,000 base pay
