Job Description
This internship role involves developing and testing advanced lithium-ion battery materials, particularly silicon nanocomposites, through experimental and modeling techniques to improve battery performance and understand degradation mechanisms.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop anode electrode slurry and coating recipes through iterative design.
- Design and execute experiments to study electrode components and battery performance.
- Investigate battery cell design and performance trade-offs across different formats.
- Identify material and cell degradation mechanisms and propose countermeasures.
- Document and present experimental results, conclusions, and recommendations to stakeholders.
Requirements
- Ability to make a minimum six month commitment to working and developing skills in this hands-on role at Sila.
- Studying toward or recently received a PhD degree in chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, or related fields.
- Prior experience working in academic and or industrial research development environments related to batteries is a plus.
- Exceptional analytical and documentation skills.
- Ability to learn new skills and ask for help when needed.
- Capable of working independently with direction.
- Willingness to spend a minimum of 6 months onsite at Sila, beginning in June 2026, to work full-time in this role.
- Physical demands include wearing personal protective equipment such as a lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and steel toe safety shoes; precise and repetitive handling of material quantities; using a fume hood to prepare samples; operating analytical equipment at a bench; moving long distances such as from building to building; being stationary for extended periods; operating a computer and other office equipment such as a laptop, copier, or printer.
Benefits & Perks
Compensation/salary range: $25/hr to $39/hr, with potential for overtime
Work schedule: Full-time onsite for a minimum of 6 months
