Job Description

The Sr. SCADA and Digital Infrastructure Engineer at SB Energy is responsible for leading control and SCADA systems design, implementation, testing, and optimization across renewable energy and data center projects, while supporting innovative AI-based control strategies and ensuring system integration and performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide SCADA and control subject matter expertise during design, contracting, construction, commissioning, and operations of renewable energy projects.
  • Manage requirements and coordinate with external parties such as ISO, QSE, NERC, utilities, and O&M teams to ensure system integration and compliance.
  • Lead and oversee SCADA and control system implementation, testing, and commissioning activities to meet project milestones and ensure successful integration.
  • Develop, implement, and validate control algorithms, including AI-based systems, to optimize hardware performance at various facilities.
  • Analyze control system performance, report findings, and recommend improvements to enhance system reliability and efficiency.
  • Evaluate and select technologies for control and SCADA systems, conducting techno-economic analyses and field assessments.
  • Lead system upgrades, feature expansions, and control projects, coordinating with internal teams and external contractors.
  • Assist in hardware integration of inverters, storage, and compute loads at pilot and commercial sites.
  • Ensure control and data acquisition hardware and software meet project specifications, standards, and reliability requirements.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in SCADA and control systems, preferably in the renewable energy sector including solar, battery storage, and data center applications.
  • B.S. Engineering from an ABET-accredited University or other technical degree; a Master's or Doctorate degree is a plus and counts towards professional experience.
  • Proficient in Ignition, Canary Labs, SEL Hardware Software, GE RX3i, CodeSYS, Data Loggers, Meteorological Equipment, etc.
  • Knowledge of networking and cybersecurity practices related to industrial control systems.
  • Broad experience across new solar technologies, energy storage, or application of artificial intelligence/machine learning to renewable energy.
  • Demonstrated strong engineering, design, and communication skills, with the ability to work in a dynamic team environment, think outside the box, and solve traditional problems in new ways.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with the ability to self-start, prioritize efforts, and drive towards completion.
  • Ability to effectively present modeling results through strong verbal, written, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage and lead SCADA-related projects, including system feature upgrades and expansions, ensuring timely and on-budget completion.
  • Experience managing requirements with external parties such as Independent System Operator (ISO), Qualified Servicing Entity (QSE), NERC, utilities, operations, and maintenance teams, and integrating these into project design.
  • Experience supporting controls testing and commissioning activities such as point-to-point testing, control AVR, PFR, curtailment, NERC, and performance tests.
  • Ability to analyze the performance of control algorithms, report results, and recommend improvements.
  • Experience in control and data acquisition hardware integration, such as inverters, storage, and compute loads, at demonstration and commercial sites.
  • Experience in developing, implementing, and validating AI-based algorithms to control hardware at demonstration and commercial projects.
  • Willingness to travel domestically up to 10%, with flexibility to work in Denver, CO, Redwood City, CA, San Diego, CA, or remotely.
