Job Description

A Staff Software Engineer at Samsara will lead the design and development of data-intensive systems to optimize energy lifecycle management, including fuel efficiency and electric vehicle infrastructure, while mentoring engineering teams and driving technical strategy for sustainability products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect and own the technical strategy for Samsara's Sustainability product suite, covering the full lifecycle of fuel and electric vehicle energy
  • Design and implement complex, data-intensive systems to improve fuel efficiency and automate emissions reporting
  • Lead the development of infrastructure for global electric vehicle fleets
  • Leverage large datasets to solve ambiguous problems such as fuel fraud detection and sensor data processing
  • Mentor senior engineers, lead design reviews, and align on long-term technical vision
  • Drive technical decisions and build consensus across multiple teams
  • Identify and solve challenging technical problems from concept to operational deployment

Requirements

  • Proven impact designing, building, and operating distributed, fault-tolerant systems at scale.
  • Experience in designing, building, and operating distributed, fault-tolerant systems at scale.
  • Hands-on contribution at a senior level, actively writing code.
  • Experience working with large-scale data processing or machine learning pipelines.
  • Ability to analyze raw data to find patterns and solve customer problems.
  • Deep sense of ownership and the ability to drive multi-quarter, cross-functional initiatives to completion without waiting for direction.
  • Strong understanding of systems and the trade-offs required to build for the long term.
  • Ability to make pragmatic decisions and navigate the complexities of a large engineering organization.
  • Experience in mentoring senior engineers, leading critical design reviews, and driving alignment on technical vision.
  • Ability to operate with a high degree of autonomy to identify and solve challenging technical problems, from initial concept to operational reality.
  • Excellent communication skills to raise standards and make complex ideas simple.
  • Experience working with large-scale data processing or machine learning pipelines.
  • Comfortable diving into raw data to find patterns and solve customer problems.
  • Educational background or equivalent experience demonstrating technical expertise in software engineering.
