Job Description

The Scientist I at RES is a hands-on role focused on ecological restoration and mitigation projects, involving fieldwork such as planting, invasive species management, controlled burns, and equipment operation to restore ecosystems and support environmental sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and support field execution of ecological restoration and mitigation bank projects, including planting, seeding, erosion control, and invasive species removal.
  • Operate and maintain various field equipment such as trucks, UTVs, skid steers, chainsaws, backpack sprayers, and GPS units.
  • Ensure safety, environmental, and quality standards are met during project activities.
  • Interpret project plans and ensure fieldwork aligns with planting, erosion control, and invasive species management standards.
  • Train and mentor field staff on equipment operation, plant identification, herbicide handling, and restoration best practices.
  • Participate in prescribed burns, adhering to certification requirements, when applicable.
  • Complete daily work logs, upload project documentation, and communicate material and personnel needs.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • At least 2 years of field experience in ecological restoration or related work
  • Valid Commercial Pesticide Applicator License in applicable categories or ability to obtain one
  • Proficiency operating and maintaining field equipment, including trailers, skid steers, chainsaws, backpack sprayers, GPS units, and other heavy machinery
  • Proven experience conducting herbicide treatments and identifying native and invasive plant species
  • Advanced use of GPS mapping tools
  • Experience leading field crews and training others in restoration tasks
  • Experience with prescribed fire and valid S130 S190 certifications per region
  • Ability to travel a minimum of 75% of the time throughout South and Central Florida
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, walk over uneven surfaces and up and down hills, climb on construction equipment, and work outdoors in all types of weather
  • Physical ability to work outdoors and in inclement weather, including lifting 50 lbs and navigating challenging terrain
