Job Description
The Ecologist at RES is responsible for conducting ecological assessments, supporting restoration and mitigation projects, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, all while collaborating with clients and team members to promote ecosystem restoration and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform ecological field assessments such as wetland delineations, stream assessments, vegetation monitoring, and species or habitat surveys
- Prepare ecological studies, scientific reports, restoration plans, and natural resources assessments
- Understand and apply federal and state environmental regulations and permitting processes related to mitigation projects
- Support business development by preparing proposals and establishing client relationships
- Manage ecological project tasks, resources, and personnel
- Coordinate and collaborate with team members, clients, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders
- Maintain accurate records of project activities, expenses, and compliance documentation
Requirements
- A Bachelor’s Degree in ecology or a related field, such as wetland science, botany, or wildlife biology.
- 5-7 years of experience in ecological profession.
- Knowledge and experience in a wide range of ecological disciplines including botany, soils, wetlands and water, wildlife biology, and restoration.
- Experience with the regulatory environment of mitigation projects, including understanding of state and federal environmental regulations and permitting processes related to mitigation, specifically CWA Sections 404 and 401 and threatened and endangered species laws.
- Ability to prepare ecological studies, scientific reports, restoration plans, natural resources assessments, and management plans and designs for projects.
- Experience performing ecological field assessments throughout the Midwest, such as vegetation monitoring, wetland delineations, and species and habitat surveys.
- Demonstrated ecological identification skills, including identification of plants, animals, ecological communities, wetlands, soils, and other relevant ecological components.
- Experience with GPS units, ArcGIS, and/or other ESRI field data collection software.
- Thorough understanding of restoration ecology theory, principles, and practices, and ability to apply them to projects.
- Ability to perform professional ecological work, including independent studies, complex data analyses, and development of restoration plans.
