A mechanical engineer at Redwood Materials will be responsible for designing, developing, and integrating high-power energy storage and conversion products, leading technical innovation, and managing a mechanical engineering team in a fast-paced startup environment.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and integrate high-power energy storage products, including thermal management, structural design, and packaging of power electronics
Perform mechanical analysis such as CFD and FEA to validate designs and ensure performance under real-world conditions
Collaborate with electrical and systems engineers for seamless mechanical integration into overall system architecture
Select materials and components in coordination with suppliers to ensure cost-effective, high-quality solutions
Lead and manage a mechanical engineering team, including recruiting, mentoring, and project management
Requirements
BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
7 years of experience in mechanical engineering, with a strong focus in power conversion or energy storage products, ideally for mass production of 10,000 units per year or higher
Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks and analysis tools including CFD and FEA
Experience developing tools, infrastructure, and design practices for a growing team
Proven track record as a senior mechanical engineer with hands-on design, prototyping, and launch experience in medium-to-high volume production
Understanding of the relationship between high voltage electronics and the mechanical systems that support and surround them, e.g., insulation systems and thermal systems
Ability to perform mechanical analysis such as CFD, FEA, thermal analysis to validate designs and ensure performance under real-world conditions
Ability to select materials and components, working closely with suppliers and vendors to ensure cost-effective, high-quality solutions
Experience leading and executing the mechanical design and development of high-volume, high-power energy conversion products from concept to deployment, including thermal management, structural design, packaging integration of power electronics, and integration with grid infrastructure
Ability to act as the primary mechanical engineering expert, driving innovation and solving technical challenges at a large scale
Experience managing project goals and timelines as a hands-on engineering manager
Experience recruiting, mentoring, and managing a high-performance mechanical engineering team
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of building relationships with all levels of the organization and presenting to internal and external executives
Ability to work in challenging working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE
Essential physical abilities such as climbing, standing, stooping, or typing
Ability to perform the essential job functions safely and successfully in accordance with ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards
Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other standards
Willingness to work in environments such as office or outdoors, and occasionally work weekends, nights, or be on-call
