Job Description

An Engineering Technician at Redwood Materials supports hardware engineering by performing precision soldering, PCB rework, and modifications on power electronic components, ensuring safety, quality, and reliability in high-voltage energy products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform precision soldering and desoldering of power electronics components
  • Rework and modify PCBs and power modules based on engineering change orders and failure analysis
  • Support prototype power electronics builds, hardware modifications, and field-return rework
  • Conduct visual and functional inspection of PCBAs to ensure compliance with standards
  • Assist engineers with thermal evaluation hardware modifications
  • Support integration of large passive components and power semiconductors
  • Maintain detailed records of rework and modifications for traceability

Requirements

  • A complete requirement for the Engineering Technician position is having expertise in soldering and printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) rework, including performing precision soldering and desoldering of power electronics components such as through-hole, high-current bus bars, fine-pitch SMD devices down to 0201, and BGA.
  • A complete requirement is to have experience reworking and modifying PCBs and power modules based on engineering change orders and failure analysis results.
  • A complete requirement is to safely handle high-voltage and high-current assemblies following electrical safety and ESD protocols, including applying lockout tagout (LOTO), proper PPE, and safe working clearances when working with energized or high-energy assemblies.
  • A complete requirement is to conduct visual and functional inspection of PCBAs to ensure adherence to IPC-A-610 and IPC-7711/7721 standards.
  • A complete requirement is to assist engineers with prototype power electronics builds, thermal evaluation hardware modifications, and field-return rework.
  • A complete requirement is to support the integration of large passive components such as capacitors, inductors, bus capacitors, and power semiconductors including IGBTs, MOSFETs, SiC, and GaN devices.
  • A complete requirement is to maintain detailed records of all rework and modifications for traceability.
  • A complete requirement is to contribute to continuous improvement of soldering, rework, and safety processes focused on high-voltage applications.
  • A complete requirement is to have an associate's degree in Electronics Technology or equivalent experience, with a preference for candidates with 2 years of electronics assembly and soldering experience, ideally in power electronics, automotive, renewable energy, or related industries.
  • A complete requirement is demonstrated experience working safely with high-voltage systems and compliance with electrical safety protocols.
  • A complete requirement is familiarity with high-voltage PCB layouts, creepage clearance rules, and conformal coating rework (a plus).
  • A complete requirement is proficiency in fine-pitch SMD soldering and heavy copper through-hole component rework.
  • A complete requirement is the ability to read schematics and assembly drawings.
  • A complete requirement is hands-on experience with soldering irons, hot air rework stations, preheaters, and microscopes.
  • A complete requirement is the ability to perform essential physical job functions safely and successfully, including working with small components under a microscope for extended periods, manual dexterity for precision soldering and handling heavy copper assemblies, and occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs.
  • A complete requirement is the ability to work in different environments such as office or outdoors, including challenging conditions with exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE.
  • A complete requirement is to be able to perform essential physical activities such as climbing, standing, stooping, or typing, and to work occasionally on weekends, nights, or be on-call, with occasional travel as needed.
