Job Description

The Project Engineer will lead the technical design, engineering, procurement, and construction of commercial and utility-scale solar projects, ensuring systems meet safety, performance, and reliability standards while managing internal and external resources throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical design, engineering, procurement, and construction of solar projects
  • Review site parameters, interconnection studies, and customer loads to optimize system design
  • Produce permit and construction drawing sets that meet codes and standards
  • Manage engineering resources to develop detailed design documentation
  • Specify equipment, develop scopes of work, and prepare procurement documentation
  • Coordinate technical reviews, permit approvals, and ensure design compliance
  • Supervise contractors during system installation and construction activities
  • Review shop drawings, inspect deliveries, and oversee testing and commissioning
  • Compile project closeout documentation including as-built drawings and manuals
  • Participate in project meetings, review site progress, and support site evaluations

Requirements

  • 3 - 5 years of commercial solar energy system design experience, preferably working with the design of new facilities
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, with a preference for candidates who have a Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Knowledgeable of the NEC (National Electrical Code) standards
  • NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) certification or PV Installation Professional Certification is a plus
  • Expertise in solar plant equipment, including PV modules, racking systems, inverters, and electrical balance of plant
  • Proficiency with PVSyst, System Advisory Model (SAM) programs, AutoCAD, PVcase, ArcGIS, Helioscope, and Aurora Solar is a plus
  • Experience reviewing civil, structural, or electrical engineering design packages
  • Experience managing third-party due diligence studies and energy production estimates
  • Ability to multi-task and manage deliverables for multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Windows Office suite, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Some travel required
  • Ability to review site parameters, interconnection studies, and customer loads to determine optimal system sizing and configuration
  • Ability to conduct detailed shading analysis, structural assessments, and electrical reviews to inform equipment selection and layout
  • Ability to model proposed designs in PVsyst or equivalent software to predict energy production and economic performance
  • Ability to develop equipment specifications, bills of materials, and detailed scopes of work for procurement and construction
  • Ability to review civil, structural, and electrical engineering design packages for compliance with technical specifications
  • Ability to provide technical supervision of contractors during system installations to ensure plan adherence
  • Ability to review shop drawings, inspect deliveries, witness factory testing, and participate in system commissioning
  • Ability to compile as-built drawings, operations manuals, warranty documents, and other project closeout paperwork
  • Ability to participate in project construction activities, including responding to contractor RFIs, attending monthly construction meetings, and reviewing site QA/QC documents
  • Ability to conduct site visits to support site constructability evaluation and construction progress
  • Desire to work in a dynamic environment alongside people with varied interests and backgrounds
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, time management, and problem-solving skills
  • Proven and influential verbal and written communication skills
