The Deputy Director will lead a campaign to develop and promote a green fertilizer industry in California, focusing on policy advocacy, coalition building, industry assessment, and project implementation to support climate, justice, and economic goals.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the development and execution of a campaign to promote green fertilizer industry transformation in California.
Build and manage a coalition of labor, community, industry, and environmental organizations aligned with campaign goals.
Assess industry landscape, identify key stakeholders, and engage with industry leaders and policymakers.
Develop policy platforms and advocate for policies to phase out fossil-based fertilizers.
Research and analyze the economic and environmental aspects of green fertilizer production and distribution.
Coordinate with external consultants and colleagues to understand costs, benefits, and risks associated with industry transformation.
Advance pilot projects to demonstrate green fertilizer solutions.
Translate campaign interests into momentum and support among stakeholders and the public.
Requirements
At least 10 years of increasing responsibility in the field, with a proven campaigning and coalition-building track record.
Background in policy development, organizing, or leadership within advocacy or movement spaces.
Experience designing policy campaigns and using tools like power mapping, strategy charts, and narrative development.
Strong familiarity with how state and local agencies and venues function.
Demonstrated relationship-building, including with grassroots groups, labor, environmental justice organizations, policymakers, and other key players in California.
Proven track record of delivering policy wins and moving ideas from strategy through implementation.
Strong project management skills and ability to juggle multiple conflicting priorities.
Cultural competency and emotional intelligence, demonstrated by experience leading multicultural teams and building alignment across divergent viewpoints.
Comfort in a matrixed work environment and skill with cross-functional collaboration (preferred).
Scrappiness and resourcefulness, with a bias toward action and a figure it out mindset (preferred).
Entrepreneurial spirit, with experience building things in fast-moving, dynamic environments (preferred).
