Job Description
An Applied AI Engineer specializing in the Public Sector, responsible for developing and implementing AI solutions to address operational challenges in government agencies, driving process transformation, and demonstrating value through prototypes and strategic engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Understand public sector AI strategies and agency challenges to develop innovative solutions with measurable public impact
- Lead technical discovery, capability demonstrations, and guide implementation during pre-sales and post-sales engagements with government clients
- Rapidly prototype AI solutions through hackathons to address critical government pain points
- Support government clients in deploying AI at scale, transforming legacy workflows into autonomous AI-driven processes
- Execute end-to-end Proof-of-Value projects, integrating secure, scalable AI systems with government data and compliance frameworks
- Serve as a technical subject matter expert for the State and Local Government vertical, sharing knowledge internally and externally
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of experience leading technical pre-sales and post-sales engagements specifically within the Public Sector State Local Government, including navigating government procurement cycles, building compelling ROI business cases for public funds, and guiding technical implementations to achieve constituent value realization.
- Deep understanding of business processes native to state and local governments such as Health Human Services, Procurement, Finance, DMV operations, or Public Safety, with the ability to translate high-level policy or agency needs into specific, impactful AI use cases.
- Expertise in generative AI techniques including RAG, few-shot learning, prompt engineering, multi-agent orchestration, multimodal understanding, or fine-tuning to build high-impact use cases such as intelligent constituent-facing chatbots, automated processing of policy documents, or grant application analysis.
- Solid knowledge of Python and common ML libraries such as LangChain, pandas, pydantic, sklearn, PyTorch, as well as data engineering tools and technologies.
- Strong presentation skills to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders, including elected officials, agency directors, and IT leadership, through technical whiteboarding sessions, formal readouts, and demos.
- Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or related fields, or equivalent work experience.
- Experience in building agentic systems using LLM orchestration, RAG, function calling, and prompt engineering, with a focus on ensuring safety through rigorous evaluations and guardrails suitable for highly scrutinized public sector environments (nice to have).
- Experience deploying and monitoring models at scale within government-compliant cloud environments such as AWS GovCloud or Azure Government (nice to have).
- Working knowledge of tools in the LLM ecosystem such as LangChain, LlamaIndex, or other open-source packages (nice to have).
- Ability to understand and translate agency objectives into AI solutions that deliver measurable public impact, including solving operational challenges like benefits administration backlogs, procurement bottlenecks, public safety resource allocation, or permitting delays.
