Job Description

The Regional Design Director leads creative excellence and design quality across multiple offices within a specific geographic region, overseeing design innovation, team development, and regional growth strategies to enhance the firm's impact and reputation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and ensure design excellence and quality across the regional portfolio.
  • Lead regional design standard reviews, project recognition, and publication efforts.
  • Represent the firm externally at regional events, conferences, and speaking engagements.
  • Lead client relationships by guiding innovative design concepts that align with client goals and societal needs.
  • Manage and nurture a community of regional designers, promoting collaboration, innovation, and growth.
  • Recruit, retain, and develop senior design talent within the region.
  • Contribute to regional and firm-wide strategic growth plans and business development initiatives.
  • Align regional design efforts with the firm’s impact-driven and Living-Centered Design ethos.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in architecture required; Bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited program preferred.
  • Generally, at least 20 years of related experience in design leadership roles or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience leading others in a design studio or design practice segment is required.
  • Current US Architectural Registration is preferred.
  • Design portfolio of significant built and unbuilt work demonstrating design ability.
  • Third-party recognition of work as a lead or supporting designer by local, regional, or national design awards programs and recognized design publications or digital platforms is required.
  • Strong oral presentation and storytelling skills required.
  • Must be able to understand and execute business strategy.
  • Must have professional acumen and maturity demonstrated by the ability to communicate authentically and respectfully.
  • Travel required for the role.
  • Ability to manage a diverse team of creatives in architecture and other disciplines spread across multiple offices.
  • Ability to set standards for collaboration, experimentation, innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship within the design community.
  • Ability to partner with executive and regional leadership teams to develop and implement regional growth and business strategies.
  • Demonstrable design talent evidenced through a portfolio of significant work.
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas, both business and design, in a compelling manner to convince others of their value.
  • Ability to lead and manage senior design leaders, mentor future leaders, and foster a high-performance design team.
  • Ability to contribute to regional and firm-wide business growth, including understanding and translating business metrics into regional strategies.
  • Experience in developing and executing strategic regional growth plans and entrepreneurial initiatives.
  • Ability to develop innovative design solutions addressing challenges related to people, community, society, and the environment.
  • Support a culture of collaboration, transparency, safety, and trust within the organization.
  • Ability to recruit, retain, and grow mid-career design talent into senior leadership roles.
  • Ability to build a high-performance team, delegate effectively, and nurture future leaders.
  • Passion for understanding and improving business performance and client relationships, supporting the firm’s financial success.
  • Ability to define and uphold the firm’s design brand through excellence in regional work.
