Job Description
The Senior Manager, HRIS, Benefits and Total Rewards is responsible for overseeing payroll, benefits administration, HR systems, and compensation strategies to ensure compliance, equity, and alignment with industry best practices, while providing analytics and continuous improvement initiatives within a nonprofit organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee full-cycle payroll processing, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and handling reconciliations, audits, and employee inquiries.
- Design, select, and administer employee benefits programs, manage open enrollment, communicate plans, and coordinate with vendors and third parties.
- Partner with brokers and vendors to negotiate and renew benefits contracts, and lead benefit vendor selection and cost management.
- Support leave administration, including FMLA and other leave laws, and advise managers and employees on leave interactions and compliance.
- Maintain and analyze HR data through the HRIS system, ensuring data accuracy, security, and developing HR metrics reports and dashboards.
- Implement and manage total rewards strategies, including salary structures, job classifications, and market benchmarking.
- Ensure compliance with legal requirements, industry standards, and internal policies through accurate reporting and policy enforcement.
- Identify process improvements, automation opportunities, and cost-saving initiatives within HR operations.
Requirements
- Proven experience managing payroll, benefits, HRIS, and compensation functions with 8-10 years of progressive HR operations and total rewards experience.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. legal regulatory compliance including federal, state, and local payroll laws, taxes, deductions, overtime, benefits withholdings, garnishments, and experience in international labor benefits laws is ideal.
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field; Master’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with salary benchmarking, job evaluation, total rewards strategy, and data analytics.
- Proficiency in HRIS payroll systems and compensation software.
- Ability to effectively communicate with people at all levels and from various backgrounds, including influencing management when appropriate.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage priorities and workflow independently and as part of various teams and committees.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Experience in designing, selecting, and administering employee benefits programs including health, dental, vision, retirement, life disability insurance, leave, and wellness initiatives.
- Experience leading or supporting system upgrades, expansions, user training, and documentation of HRIS payroll benefit workflows and policies.
- Ability to develop reports and dashboards for HR metrics analytics such as turnover, compensation metrics, payroll cost, and benefit utilization.
- Experience managing the annual open enrollment process, benefit changes onboarding, life events, offboarding, and effectively communicating benefits plans to employees.
- Experience partnering with brokers, vendors, and third-party administrators to manage benefits contracts, renewals, negotiations, and cost management.
- Experience supporting FMLA leave administration, including communication with employees and ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations such as ERISA, ACA, HIPAA, COBRA, and FMLA.
- Ability to advise managers and employees on the interaction of leave laws with paid time off, workers compensation, and short-term and long-term disability benefits.
- Experience implementing and managing a comprehensive compensation strategy including salary structure, job classifications, market benchmarking, and leading annual salary reviews.
- Knowledge of maintaining compliance with applicable laws and regulations related to compensation, benefits, and payroll.
- Experience ensuring accurate and timely reporting for compliance, audits, and organizational needs.
- Ability to monitor and analyze data to assess the impact and effectiveness of HR programs.
- Experience actively identifying process improvements, automation, and cost savings in HR operations.
- High integrity, confidentiality, fairness, ethics, good judgment, and the ability to make timely and sound decisions.
- Physical ability to sit for prolonged periods working on a computer, with potential for extended hours and limited domestic or international travel as needed.
