Job Description
The Field Technician will be responsible for maintaining and operating utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), including monitoring, troubleshooting, repairing, and supervising contractors to ensure safe and efficient plant performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor BESS Plant operation through SCADA systems.
- Perform commissioning, testing, inspection, troubleshooting, repairing, and modifying AC and DC BESS systems including inverters, transformers, switchgear, and metering systems.
- Supervise contractors to ensure safe, high-quality, and timely maintenance activities.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols, procedures, and electrical codes.
- Conduct corrective, preventive, and emergency maintenance for solar PV and BESS systems.
- Perform onsite installation, repair, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis of electrical faults.
- Create and follow operational, switching, maintenance, safety, and environmental procedures.
- Test electrical equipment using appropriate tools and ensure proper documentation and reporting.
- Manage materials, stock levels, and procurement documentation.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment and support emergency or overtime work as needed.
Requirements
- 3 years of direct experience as a BESS technician or PV solar technician or 6 years experience in a non-solar electrical maintenance role.
- Excellent writing and verbal skills.
- Valid U.S. Driver license with acceptable MVR history.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Strong communications and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical co-workers and vendors.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment including steel composite toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective jacket or apron, and arm guards.
- Will sit, stand, or walk short distances for up to the entire duration of a shift.
- Will lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis.
- Must be able to comply with all safety standards and procedures.
- Willingness to work flexible hours and be on-call for emergencies.
- Proficiency in performing testing, switching, and troubleshooting of low, medium, and high voltage equipment, including transformers, breakers, relays, contactors, motors, batteries, and inverters.
- Understanding of electrical safety, local and national electrical codes, and arc flash standards.
- Proficient understanding of electrical schematics and electrical principles.
- Ability to perform onsite installations, repairs, and troubleshooting.
- Ability to carry out site root analysis and apply root cause analysis techniques on all major and recurring faults.
- Ability to investigate technical failures and prepare formal technical reports.
- Proficiency with CMMS systems for maintenance tracking.
- Proficiency in testing equipment such as Power Quality Meters, Insulation Resistance Testers, Multimeters, and other relevant tools.
- Proven computer skills in a Windows environment, including Microsoft Office products.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects.
- Self-directed and accountable, with critical thinking about processes and issues.
- Ability to communicate cross-functionally across all necessary parts of the organization to achieve resolution to plant issues.
- Ability to support job responsibilities outside scheduled work hours, including night, overtime, weekend, and holiday work.
- Travel may be required.
