Job Description
The Controls Drafter is responsible for designing and drafting electrical instrumentation and control systems for combustion processes, collaborating with engineering teams, and ensuring compliance with relevant standards using AutoCAD and related tools.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, layout, and prepare drafting packages for combustion control systems with a focus on electrical instrumentation.
- Coordinate with Controls Engineers and Project Engineers on equipment selection, system design, and scheduling.
- Develop combustion system drawings using AutoCAD, including wiring diagrams, ladder diagrams, PLC layouts, and schematic designs.
- Create and manage Bills of Materials and ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards, and specifications.
- Participate in turnover meetings and communicate with internal teams and customers for clarifications and scheduling.
- Confirm equipment operation and design as per customer orders and internal approvals.
Requirements
- Associate or Bachelor degree in Engineering or Technology field relative to Instrumentation, Electrical, MET, Inst. Tech or equivalent experience as justified.
- At least 2 years of design and/or drafting experience with electrical systems, instrumentation, and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID).
- At least 2 years of experience with AutoCAD or equivalent CAD software.
- Confirm equipment selection, design, and operation as quoted and sold to the customer once the customer order is confirmed and released internally.
- Coordinate with internal engineering teams on equipment and component selection for the design of the combustion control system.
- Utilize AutoCAD to develop combustion system drafting packages including electrical wiring design, ladder diagrams, PLC layout, panel layout, overall schematic design, and bill of materials.
- Apply relevant codes, standards, and specifications as required for the design and drafting work.
- Interact with Controls Engineer and Controls Engineering Manager on system design and scheduling as needed.
- Interact with Project Engineer on scheduling and clarifications with the customer.
- Familiarity with electrical design installation, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), power distribution, relay logic, instrumentation selection (e.g., transmitters, meters), variable frequency drives, and voltages from 12VDC up to 480VAC.
- Familiarity with local and federal codes, regulations, and specifications, including NRTL applications such as UL, cUL, CSA, and NFPA; application experience is a plus.
- Knowledge of standard wiring practices and installation methods in both unclassified and classified areas.
- Proficiency in standard personal computer skills and professional correspondence.
- Ability to conduct oneself in a professional manner both inside and outside the workplace.
