The Sales Tax Accountant is responsible for preparing and filing sales and property tax returns across multiple states, maintaining compliance, reconciling accounts, supporting audits, and ensuring accurate tax reporting, while collaborating with internal teams and managing related documentation.
Key Responsibilities
Register sales tax in new states as required
Maintain schedules and checklists for sales tax filings and annual reports
Prepare and file sales tax returns in all applicable states
Reconcile sales tax accounts with the general ledger
Research and resolve reconciling sales tax items
Support sales tax audits and notices
Prepare sales tax return amendments
Maintain and update sales tax rates in the ERP system
Review ERP data for completeness
Register entities with Secretary of State as needed
Maintain organized filing systems for tax correspondence and returns
Perform monthly bookkeeping for non-operating entities using QuickBooks
Assist with general tax research and reconciliation
Requirements
Three or more years of experience with multi-state sales and property tax accounting and two years of general accounting experience.
Strong analytical skills and comfort with creating report queries to extract data to Excel for manipulation and reporting.
Ability to perform mathematical computations accurately and the ability to identify and correct errors.
Sufficient interpersonal skills to effectively interact with persons inside and outside the company.
Ability to work under stress, meet deadlines, and handle multiple priorities.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to research, analyze, and retrieve data necessary to complete duties.
Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
Must be able to walk up and down stairs and sit for long periods of time if necessary.
