Job Description
This internship offers undergraduate civil engineering students the opportunity to work on transportation and rail projects, gaining hands-on experience in site planning, design, calculations, and construction administration while collaborating with engineers and technicians in a professional environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in developing preliminary and final project designs using AutoCAD and Civil 3D
- Perform calculations for project dimensions, elevations, earthwork, utilities, and track quantities
- Support site assessments and surveys for project planning
- Contribute to construction administration by providing feedback on project status and challenges
- Engage in various project stages from conception through construction to gain industry experience
Requirements
- Candidates must be at least 21 years of age as of May 30, 2026, due to responsibilities that may require operation of a motorized vehicle to conduct business on behalf of TKDA.
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Candidates must be pursuing an undergraduate Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
- Candidates must have a strong interest in transportation, specifically within the railroad and/or mass transit sector.
- Candidates must be available to work 40 hours per week with occasional overtime throughout the summer of 2026 from mid-May through mid-August.
- Candidates must be able to complete and pass any background, security, and drug tests required by TKDA, clients, and state and/or federal agencies.
- Candidates must be able to perform the responsibilities associated with the internship, which include working from the office in Bloomington, Minnesota, or an assigned project site.
- Candidates must be able to contribute to the development of preliminary and final designs using AutoCAD and Civil 3D, and perform calculations for project dimensions, elevations, earthwork, utilities, and track quantities.
- Candidates must assist with preliminary site assessments and surveys, and construction administration responsibilities by working closely with team members to provide information and feedback on project status and potential construction or design-related challenges.
- Candidates must successfully complete a standard pre-employment background screening, including Social Security verification, educational verification, review of criminal convictions, and driving history.
