Job Description

The Principal Mechanical Engineer will lead the design and standardization of large-scale industrial chiller plants and mechanical systems for data centers, collaborating across teams to develop specifications, improve operational efficiency, and support sustainable infrastructure development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design development of large-scale industrial chiller plants and associated standards and specifications
  • Collaborate with architects, engineering disciplines, procurement, and operations teams to ensure standards are established and implemented
  • Research, evaluate, and approve vendor products and equipment to improve operations and reduce costs
  • Create and standardize mechanical sequences of operations and commissioning documentation
  • Conduct value engineering analyses and provide system recommendations based on ROI and IRR
  • Analyze CFD studies, psychrometric data, and environmental impacts to optimize data center cooling and infrastructure
  • Ensure compliance with building codes and integrate plumbing and fire protection systems into data center designs
  • Participate in new product development, patent applications, and continuous improvement initiatives

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent from an accredited university or college
  • Professional Engineer P.E. registration preferred
  • 7 years of experience in large-scale industrial chiller plant system design and construction required
  • 8 to 12 years of experience in large-scale industrial chiller plant system design and construction preferred
  • Data center and/or mission-critical experience required
  • Experience with North American or European construction markets required
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Excel, and Word, and familiarity with CFD modeling software such as Revit, BIM, and Navisworks
  • Solid understanding of critical cooling infrastructure within data centers
  • Experience in all aspects of mechanical engineering including central utility plants, built-up mechanical rooms, packaged equipment, chilled water equipment and piping, DX systems, airside and water-side economization, humidity control, raised access floor plenums, and value engineering as they relate to designing state-of-the-art data centers
  • Knowledge of plumbing and fire protection design for data centers
  • Ability to research and evaluate new vendors and products to achieve operational improvements, reduce project cost, and improve schedule
  • Experience reviewing and approving OFCI equipment submittals to ensure compliance with company specifications
  • Ability to coordinate with regional design and execution teams to understand OPR deviations and lessons learned from projects, and analyze whether these can improve standards and specifications
  • Experience participating in creating and standardizing mechanical sequences of operations (SOOs) in coordination with internal automation teams
  • Experience conducting value engineering analyses and providing system recommendations based on ROI and IRR analysis
  • Ability to identify and create tools and templates that add value to delivered products
  • Experience standardizing commissioning documentation for global application
  • Ability to work closely with Operations to balance cost-effective solutions and operational sustainability
  • Experience optimizing designs to meet company sustainability targets
  • Proficiency in analyzing CFD studies, rack layout optimization, psychrometric chart evaluations, and ASHRAE extreme design day temperature impacts
  • Experience performing Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) calculations
  • Willingness to perform additional duties as assigned by management
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally, typically 10-15%, which may increase as business evolves
  • Physical ability to work on-site near Temple, TX
