Job Description

The Scientist I at RES supports environmental compliance efforts by performing field inspections of stormwater systems, construction sites, and outfalls, ensuring regulatory adherence and protecting water quality, while gaining practical experience in environmental regulation and inspection techniques.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform field inspections of stormwater assets, construction sites, and outfalls to ensure environmental compliance.
  • Review construction plans, permits, and specifications related to stormwater management and environmental regulations.
  • Document inspection findings through detailed reports, photographs, and data collection.
  • Assist with compiling inspection and monitoring data for regulatory reporting, including NPDES annual reports.
  • Support the implementation of NPDES program requirements across various projects, including transportation, infrastructure, and restoration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, geology, natural resources, or a related field
  • 0 to 2 years of field experience, which can include field inspections, internships, academic fieldwork, volunteer work, or construction-related environmental work
  • Basic knowledge of scientific methods, field data collection, safe field practices, and basic plan or permit review
  • Knowledge of erosion and sediment control, stormwater management, or environmental compliance
  • Familiarity with NPDES permitting, stormwater BMPs, or environmental inspections, either academic or professional
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on active construction sites
  • Strong oral and written communication skills for data documentation and reporting
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality data collection and documentation
  • Reliability, professionalism, and comfort working independently in the field
  • Ability to balance fieldwork with office-based reporting and data management
  • Strong work ethic and reliability in team-based fieldwork
