Job Description

The Lead Environmental Scientist Ecology at RES is responsible for overseeing ecological restoration projects, monitoring conservation sites, and providing scientific expertise in habitat management, while leading field teams and collaborating with stakeholders to protect and restore natural ecosystems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support ecological restoration projects through scientific expertise, field leadership, and mentoring.
  • Oversee monitoring and maintenance of conservation and mitigation banks, including species-specific requirements.
  • Lead and train field teams in sampling protocols, safety procedures, and data collection.
  • Operate and maintain scientific equipment to ensure accurate data collection.
  • Review and interpret technical documentation, including monitoring plans and laboratory results.
  • Collect, manage, and analyze large datasets with quality control measures.
  • Write technical reports with minimal revisions and mentor junior staff in data analysis and reporting.
  • Evaluate sites for regulatory and technical requirements, perform risk analyses, and inform project strategies.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, project teams, and regulatory agencies on project design and scheduling.
  • Communicate project needs and status updates to clients and stakeholders.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in natural or physical sciences; an advanced degree is preferred.
  • Five years of relevant experience, or three years of relevant experience with an advanced degree.
  • Section 10 a 1 A permit under the Endangered Species Act or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of starting employment.
  • Strong technical and writing background with the ability to write advanced technical reports with minimal revisions.
  • Experience supporting complex ecological restoration projects, including overseeing monitoring and maintenance of conservation and mitigation banks.
  • Experience working with federally and state-listed threatened and endangered plant and wildlife species, including monitoring requirements for species such as California tiger salamander and California red-legged frog.
  • Ability to operate and maintain scientific equipment used in field data collection.
  • Experience collecting, managing, and analyzing large datasets with rigorous quality control to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Ability to lead, train, and mentor field teams in sampling protocols, safety procedures, and data collection.
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting technical documentation such as standard operating procedures, monitoring plans, maps, and laboratory results.
  • Ability to evaluate sites to identify regulatory and technical requirements, perform risk analyses, and provide insights to inform project strategies.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience collaborating with landowners, grazers, subcontractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Willingness and ability to work onsite at least three days per week at the Sacramento, CA office, with regular travel and occasional overnight stays.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in various habitats and in a dynamic work environment where schedules, site locations, and tasks can shift based on project needs.

Benefits & Perks

Compensation/salary range: $82,600 - $101,000 USD
Work schedule: Regular onsite presence at least three days per week, with regular travel and occasional overnight stays
