Job Description
A hands-on role focused on executing and maintaining ecological restoration projects, including planting, invasive species control, and prescribed burns, primarily in remote outdoor locations. The position involves operating heavy equipment, ensuring safety and environmental standards, and supporting team efforts to restore ecosystems and natural resources.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support field execution of ecological restoration projects, including planting, seeding, erosion control, and invasive species removal.
- Operate and maintain various equipment such as trucks, UTVs, skid steers, chainsaws, and GPS units to ensure project tasks are completed safely and efficiently.
- Inspect and support subcontractor work to meet quality, safety, and environmental standards.
- Interpret project plans and ensure fieldwork aligns with restoration goals and standards.
- Train and mentor field staff on equipment operation, plant identification, herbicide handling, and restoration best practices.
- Participate in prescribed burns, including obtaining necessary certifications, and support fire management activities.
- Complete daily work logs, upload project photos, and communicate material, equipment, and personnel needs.
- Ensure safety protocols are followed through daily safety meetings and PPE compliance.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- At least 2 years of field experience in ecological restoration or related work
- Valid Commercial Pesticide Applicator License in applicable categories or ability to obtain one
- Proficiency operating and maintaining field equipment, including trailers, skid steers, chainsaws, and backpack sprayers
- Proven experience conducting herbicide treatments and identifying native and invasive plant species
- Advanced use of GPS mapping tools
- Experience leading field crews and training others in restoration tasks
- Experience with prescribed fire and valid S130 S190 certifications per region
- Ability to safely operate and maintain equipment such as trucks with trailers, UTVs, skid steers, chainsaws, backpack sprayers, and GPS units
- Ability to interpret project plans and ensure fieldwork aligns with planting plans, erosion and sediment control plans, and invasive management standards
- Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather, lift up to 50 pounds, walk over uneven surfaces, and navigate challenging terrain
- Must be able to travel a minimum of 75% throughout South and Central Florida
- Physical ability to lift 50 pounds, work outdoors in inclement weather, and climb on construction equipment
