Job Description

The Restoration Operator I is responsible for implementing ecological restoration activities such as habitat restoration, invasive species control, and site maintenance using specialized equipment, primarily outdoors, to help restore wetlands, streams, and natural landscapes while working as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement field-level restoration activities such as invasive species control, planting, seeding, and erosion management
  • Operate specialized equipment including excavators, skid steers, tractors, ATVs, and herbicide application tools
  • Maintain and troubleshoot field equipment and machinery
  • Use mapping tools to track and document restoration progress
  • Identify and protect native species while controlling invasive species
  • Perform site clearing and prepare sites for restoration activities
  • Load and transport materials to and from nurseries and project sites

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • At least 1 year of experience in ecological restoration, landscaping, agriculture, or related work
  • Experience with the repair and maintenance of small engines and equipment
  • Ability to understand the project plans, details, and specifications
  • Valid Commercial Pesticide Applicator License or ability to obtain one (state-specific)
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs, walk on uneven ground, and climb onto construction equipment
  • Mid-level ability to troubleshoot and diagnose field equipment issues
  • Knowledge of auto, truck, and construction equipment maintenance schedules, fluid requirements, and basic diagnostic processes
  • Experience operating equipment such as excavators (10,000-60,000 lbs), skid steers with standard and forestry attachments, small to medium-sized tractors (40-125 hp), ATVs, zero-turn lawn mowers, and herbicide application equipment
  • Ability to operate chainsaws, gas-powered brush cutters, and augers
  • Ability to calibrate native seed drills and herbicide preparation equipment
  • Ability to use mapping equipment and apps to track field progress
  • Physical ability to perform tasks such as loading plant and project materials, and perform invasive brush clearing, tree felling, planting, seeding, erosion, and sediment controls
  • Physical ability to perform maintenance and mowing of solar fields through equipment operation and herbicide application
  • Willingness to travel throughout the Midwest with overnight stays of 2-4 nights, with Per Diem and hotel stay provided
