Job Description
A mechanical engineer at Redwood Materials will be responsible for designing, developing, and integrating high-power energy storage and conversion products, leading technical innovation, and managing a mechanical engineering team in a fast-paced startup environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and integrate high-power energy storage products, including thermal management, structural design, and packaging.
- Perform mechanical analysis such as CFD and FEA to validate designs and ensure performance.
- Collaborate with electrical and systems engineers for seamless mechanical integration.
- Select materials and components in coordination with suppliers to ensure quality and cost-effectiveness.
- Lead and manage a mechanical engineering team, including recruiting, mentoring, and project management.
Requirements
- BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
- 7 years of experience in mechanical engineering, with a strong focus in power conversion or energy storage products, ideally for mass production of 10,000 units per year or higher
- Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks and analysis tools including CFD and FEA
- Experience developing tools, infrastructure, and design practices for a growing team
- Proven track record as a senior mechanical engineer with hands-on design, prototyping, and launch experience in medium-to-high volume production
- Understanding of the relationship between high voltage electronics and the mechanical systems that support and surround them, such as insulation systems and thermal systems
- Ability to perform mechanical analysis including CFD, FEA, thermal analysis, etc., to validate designs and ensure performance under real-world conditions
- Experience leading the mechanical design and development of high-volume, high-power energy conversion products from concept to deployment, including thermal management, structural design, packaging integration of power electronics, and integration with grid infrastructure
- Ability to select materials and components, working closely with suppliers and vendors to ensure cost-effective, high-quality solutions
- Experience managing projects as a hands-on engineering manager, accountable for project goals and timelines
- Experience recruiting, mentoring, and managing a high-performance mechanical engineering team
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of building relationships with all levels of the organization and presenting to internal and external executives

Compensation/salary range: $117,500 - $227,500 USD

Work environment includes challenging conditions such as exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, with PPE provided
Occasional work on weekends, nights, or being on-call
