Job Description
The Thermal Engineer will be responsible for designing, analyzing, testing, and overseeing the thermal systems of Planet's spacecraft and satellites, ensuring all components operate within specified temperature ranges throughout the mission lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the thermal design of key spacecraft subsystems across the satellite fleet.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to derive requirements that drive thermal design.
- Ensure spacecraft components operate within their temperature ranges throughout all mission phases.
- Develop thermal analysis and testing plans to validate thermal performance.
- Oversee the quality of space hardware during manufacturing and assembly.
- Develop and manage thermal hardware interfaces and interface control documents (ICDs).
- Support mission testing and qualification campaigns related to thermal performance.
- Manage thermal hardware configuration and release to production.
- Collaborate with mission operations and guidance, navigation, and control teams to ensure proper thermal conditions during missions.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Aerospace Engineering or other related engineering or science degree.
- 4 years of experience in thermal designing of spacecraft.
- Good understanding of heat transfer.
- Knowledge of thermal control technology of spacecraft.
- Ability to design tests proving thermal design.
- Experience in Thermal Desktop SINDA for spacecraft-level analysis or similar tools for chip-level analysis.
- Ability to progress initiatives while working independently and as part of a team.
- This position requires access to export-controlled information, and employment or hiring of a contractor is contingent upon the candidate's ability to access all applicable export-controlled information without additional export licensing being required by the Bureau of Industry and Security and/or the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls.

Salary range: $128,400 - $160,500 USD (for San Francisco location)
