Job Description
The Thermal Engineer at Planet will be responsible for designing, analyzing, and testing thermal systems for spacecraft and their subsystems, collaborating with cross-disciplinary teams to ensure thermal requirements are met throughout the mission lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, analyze, and test thermal systems for spacecraft and subsystems
- Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, optical, and other engineering teams to derive requirements and ensure thermal performance
- Ensure payload components operate within temperature ranges throughout all mission phases
- Develop thermal hardware configurations, interface control documents, and manage thermal hardware release to production
- Support thermal testing, qualification campaigns, and validation of thermal designs
- Coordinate with mission operations and guidance, navigation, and control teams to ensure proper thermal conditions during mission planning and operation
Requirements
- Pursuing Master’s or PhD degree in Mechanical Aerospace Engineering or other related engineering or science degree.
- Good understanding of heat transfer.
- Ability to design tests proving thermal design.
- Experience in Thermal analysis or similar tools for chip-level analysis.
- Ability to progress initiatives while working independently and as part of a team.
- This position requires access to export-controlled information, and employment or hiring of a contractor is contingent upon the candidate’s ability to access all applicable export-controlled information without additional export licensing being required by the Bureau of Industry and Security and/or the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls.

Compensation range of $35 - $60 per hour (US), with final salary determined by experience, skills, and location
San Francisco salary range of $37 - $60 USD
