Job Description

The Solution Engineer serves as a technical consultant and project leader, designing and supporting advanced automation solutions across various industries, while providing pre-sales support, technical expertise, and industry-specific system development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and support advanced automation solutions integrating complex technical products with third-party components.
  • Develop expertise in industry-specific technologies and attain relevant certifications.
  • Mentor and advise junior engineers and technical staff on product performance and design improvements.
  • Provide pre-sales technical support and develop solution frameworks based on customer requirements.
  • Lead proof of concept or pilot applications and develop test plans to validate solutions.
  • Support project management and provide on-site installation start-up support.
  • Conduct application demonstrations and technical seminars to promote solutions.
  • Research and communicate data on emerging products and technologies to inform product development.
  • Support sales efforts by providing technical expertise to OEMs, end-users, and system integrators.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of industrial networking, communication protocols, and Phoenix Contact products.

Requirements

  • Minimum Associate's Technical Degree or equivalent experience; Bachelor’s degree in engineering or technical focus preferred.
  • Minimum of 4 years industrial automation experience.
  • Industry-specific controls system design and programming experience.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Ability to set priorities and perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities to meet business goals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with comfort in delivering group presentations.
  • Minimum 35% travel requirement, including 2-5 overseas trips.
  • Must be able to lift 60 pounds.
  • Must be able to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time, up to 2-4 hours at a time.
  • Must be able to work on a computer for extended periods of time, up to 4 hours at a time.
  • Must be able to travel in vehicles, automobiles, trains, and planes for up to 10 hours.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in verbal and written English.
  • Must comply with company dress code guidelines.
  • Must demonstrate punctuality and attendance in accordance with company policies.
  • Timely reporting of expenses and regular, on-time attendance.
  • Ability to develop an expert understanding of industrial networking and communication technologies, specifically Industrial Ethernet Protocols Profinet, Ethernet IP, and Modbus TCP.
  • Ability to develop and maintain an expert working knowledge of all Phoenix Contact industrial products, with emphasis on IEC 61131 programming, industrial Ethernet wired and wireless, and networked I/O.
  • Ability to research and understand existing competitive and emerging products and technologies.
  • Ability to document and internally communicate data supporting the development of new products to meet customer requirements.
  • Ability to support sales efforts of complex technical products at OEM, end-user, and system integrator accounts within primary and supported market segments.
  • Ability to develop and conduct control solution presentations and technology seminars to targeted audiences.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and support on-site installation start-up activities.
  • Ability to provide applied solution design and engineering support to the Control and Industry Solutions team.
  • Ability to independently qualify and gather input for designs through functional specification review or direct customer interaction.
  • Ability to develop and implement test plans to validate proposed solutions.
  • Ability to serve as technical lead on proof of concept or pilot applications.
  • Ability to provide project management as required and advise project teams on technical issues throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ability to perform advanced system testing and troubleshooting utilizing spectrum analyzers, storage scopes, power monitors, volt meters, and other test equipment.
  • Ability to develop training programs and training materials to support complex control system projects.
  • Ability to mentor and advise Associate Solution Engineers, Technical Service, Product Engineering, and Product Management on product performance and suggest design improvements.
  • Ability to support Phoenix Contact field personnel and channel partners in technical aspects related to the sale of systems and solutions.
  • Ability to research, understand, and stay current on existing and emerging products and technologies relevant to industrial automation.
  • Ability to develop a concept framework based on customer requirements and industry standards for pre-sales technical support.
  • Ability to develop and serve as technical lead on proof of concept or pilot applications.
  • Ability to develop and maintain an expert understanding of industrial networking and communication technologies, specifically Profinet, Ethernet IP, and Modbus TCP.
  • Ability to attend and participate in industry trade events and conferences, including presenting Phoenix Contact case studies, to maintain knowledge proficiency.
