Job Description
The Technical Director will lead engineering, project delivery, and operations for renewable energy projects, primarily solar, in the Philippines, ensuring technical excellence, safety, and project success from development through asset lifecycle management.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead engineering activities, ensuring compliance with technical standards and integrating latest renewable energy technologies.
- Oversee construction, commissioning, and project delivery of solar PV plants, transmission lines, and substations, managing schedules, budgets, and risks.
- Develop and implement operations and maintenance strategies to maximize asset performance and reliability.
- Act as a technical advisor during project development, providing system design, feasibility assessments, and supporting proposals.
- Ensure health, safety, and environmental standards are met across all projects and operations.
- Manage technical evaluations, contract negotiations, and procurement processes for EPC tenders and vendor agreements.
- Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing technical team, fostering professional development and strategic alignment.
- Coordinate grid interconnection studies and ensure compliance with utility requirements.
- Monitor project progress, prepare technical reports, and support investment and acquisition decisions.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in engineering Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil; Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in renewable energy with proven experience in solar PV, transmission lines, substations, and battery storage.
- Track record of delivering at least 200 MW of renewable projects.
- Ability to implement project controls, reporting systems, and risk management frameworks.
- Strong command of Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word for reporting and analysis.
- Experience overseeing engineering, project delivery, and operations & maintenance for renewable energy assets.
- Experience managing a local technical team of up to 10 professionals.
- Ability to enforce standard technical specifications for solar PV, transmission lines, and substations.
- Experience applying value engineering principles to optimize cost, performance, and sustainability.
- Proven ability to drive creative problem-solving and innovative design approaches for complex technical challenges.
- Experience ensuring integration of latest technologies and best practices in renewable energy systems.
- Experience reviewing and approving engineering designs, drawings, and technical documentation internally and externally.
- Experience coordinating grid interconnection studies and ensuring compliance with local utility requirements.
- Experience overseeing construction and commissioning of solar PV plants, transmission lines, and substations.
- Ability to manage project schedules, budgets, and risk mitigation strategies using advanced project management tools such as MS Project, Primavera, or equivalent.
- Experience preparing and delivering progress reports to regional leadership and JV partners.
- Ability to coordinate with EPC contractors and monitor progress against milestones.
- Experience developing and implementing comprehensive Operations & Maintenance strategies for utility-scale and distributed generation assets.
- Experience establishing preventive and predictive maintenance programs to maximize asset availability and performance.
- Experience monitoring plant performance using SCADA and advanced analytics, and resolving technical issues proactively.
- Ability to manage spare parts inventory, warranties, and vendor relationships to minimize downtime.
- Experience driving continuous improvement initiatives to reduce O&M costs and improve reliability.
- Experience overseeing third-party service providers and ensuring adherence to SLAs.
- Ability to act as a technical advisor during early-stage project development, providing technical input for proposals, system design, grid connection, and cost estimates.
- Experience collaborating with project teams during early-stage project development and participating in customer meetings and presentations.
- Ability to assist in risk assessment for early-stage projects, highlighting technical and operational risks.
- Experience supporting M&A activities by evaluating technical aspects of target assets, including plant performance, grid compliance, and O&M requirements.
- Ability to prepare technical reports and recommendations for investment committees during acquisition processes.
- Experience developing and enforcing Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) standards across all projects, ensuring compliance with local regulations and international best practices.
- Experience implementing robust Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) processes during design, construction, and operations.
- Ability to lead technical evaluation, contract negotiation, and management of EPC tenders, ensuring favorable terms and risk mitigation.
- Strong knowledge of FIDIC and other international contract forms to ensure compliance and risk mitigation.
- Proven leadership skills to build, mentor, and manage a high-performing technical team, including recruitment, coaching, and career development initiatives.
- Ability to provide strategic direction aligned with regional objectives.
- Fluency in English.
- Willingness to travel frequently to project sites within the Philippines.
