Job Description
The Director of Development is responsible for leading the site design, permitting, and early project execution of battery energy storage projects, ensuring they are ready for construction while managing budgets, schedules, and team performance in a fast-paced urban environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and scale the site design and permitting phase of a portfolio of BESS projects from handover until they are shovel ready.
- Lead a team of Project Managers, Permitting Lead, and Principal Engineer to ensure projects meet schedule, budget, and quality targets.
- Oversee the development of robust, cost-effective, and compliant BESS designs and guide major technical decisions.
- Create and execute permitting strategies, negotiate with authorities having jurisdiction, and address high-stakes issues.
- Ensure budgets and schedules for site design and permitting are met and review project plans for compliance with objectives.
- Develop and improve processes, tools, and standards to enhance efficiency, reduce timelines, and mitigate risks.
- Supervise the final project handover to the construction team, ensuring a smooth transition to build phase.
- Report project milestones, risks, and development decisions to executive leadership, particularly the Chief Project Officer.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team, fostering a collaborative and results-driven culture.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related field.
- A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in a technical project development field such as architecture, engineering, or infrastructure real estate development.
- At least 5 years of experience in a direct leadership role, with a proven ability to manage, mentor, and develop a high-performing team.
- Experience in managing all facets of project execution, including detailed design, permitting, schedule creation, and budget adherence, to successfully bring complex projects to a state that is ready for construction.
- Proven ability to operate at a strategic level and communicate effectively with C-suite executives and external stakeholders.
- Strong financial acumen and experience managing multi-million dollar development budgets.
- Experience managing development projects within New York City or a similarly dense and complex urban regulatory environment.
