Job Description
The Director of Development is responsible for leading the site design, permitting, and early project execution of battery energy storage projects, ensuring they are ready for construction while managing a team and coordinating with stakeholders to meet budget, schedule, and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and scale the site design and permitting phase of a portfolio of battery energy storage projects after handover from origination.
- Lead a team of project managers, permitting leads, and engineers to develop shovel-ready projects within budget, schedule, and quality targets.
- Oversee the development of robust, cost-effective, and compliant engineering designs for BESS projects.
- Create and execute permitting strategies, negotiate with authorities having jurisdiction, and address high-stakes permitting issues.
- Ensure budgets and schedules for site design and permitting are met and develop processes to improve efficiency and reduce risks.
- Identify and resolve major project risks and challenges, leading problem-solving efforts.
- Supervise the final project handover to the construction team, ensuring a smooth transition to the build phase.
- Report project milestones, risks, and key decisions to executive leadership, maintaining clear communication with stakeholders.
- Lead, mentor, and develop the project development team, fostering a high-performance, collaborative culture.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related field.
- A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in a technical project development field such as architecture, engineering, or infrastructure real estate development.
- At least 5 years of experience in a direct leadership role, with a proven ability to manage, mentor, and develop a high-performing team.
- Experience in managing all facets of project execution, including detailed design, permitting, schedule creation, and budget adherence, to successfully bring complex projects to a state that is ready for construction.
- Proven ability to operate at a strategic level and communicate effectively with C-suite executives and external stakeholders.
- Strong financial acumen and experience managing multi-million dollar development budgets.
- Experience managing development projects within New York City or a similarly dense and complex urban regulatory environment.
