Job Description

The Director of Construction leads and manages all field construction activities for renewable energy projects, ensuring safety, quality, schedule, and budget adherence while building and scaling a high-performing team in a fast-paced, urban environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the field execution strategy from pre-construction to project closeout.
  • Lead and scale the construction team, including hiring, mentoring, and setting performance objectives.
  • Oversee all on-site construction activities, ensuring safety, quality, and adherence to schedule and budget.
  • Manage construction budgets, change orders, and financial reporting for construction projects.
  • Coordinate with pre-construction and development teams to ensure seamless project transitions and constructability.
  • Oversee contractor relationships, performance, and logistics, including equipment delivery and commissioning.
  • Establish and enforce safety programs and standards across all construction sites.
  • Standardize and optimize construction processes, workflows, and quality control procedures.
  • Serve as the primary escalation point for construction issues, risks, and stakeholder communication.
  • Forecast resource needs and assign construction management teams to projects.
  • Manage project schedules, stakeholder coordination, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Implement and improve project management and field reporting tools.
  • Analyze lessons learned to identify process improvements and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in construction management, with a significant focus on managing complex electrical or power generation projects.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a direct leadership role, with a proven ability to manage, mentor, and develop a high-performing project management team.
  • Extensive experience managing active construction sites, with deep knowledge of construction means and methods, coordination, budget management, and quality control.
  • Proven ability to drive and manage complex construction schedules, coordinating multiple stakeholders including utilities, Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), equipment vendors, and contractors to meet critical deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing relationships with vendors and contractors, with proven expertise in managing construction contracts and rigorously managing the change order process.
  • Demonstrable experience in developing and enforcing comprehensive safety programs (EHS) on complex industrial or commercial construction projects.
  • Strong financial acumen with experience developing and managing multi-million dollar construction budgets, including forecasting and change order management.
  • Proficiency in advanced scheduling software such as Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project, and construction project management platforms such as Procore and Kahua.
  • Ability to develop and implement field execution strategies, standardize processes, and establish workflows for quality control, commissioning, and project closeout.
  • Experience managing relationships with major electrical contractors, equipment manufacturers, and vendors, particularly in the renewable energy or power generation sectors, especially with medium voltage power systems, grid-interconnection, or Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
  • Experience managing construction within dense urban environments such as New York City or similarly complex regulatory environments.
  • Ability to oversee and enforce safety and regulatory compliance across multiple sites.
  • Experience managing construction projects under large-scale Master Service Agreements (MSAs) or alternative contracting models in addition to standard General Contractor agreements.
  • Possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification (preferred).
  • Fluency in utility interconnection and commissioning requirements, particularly with utilities such as Con Edison (preferred).
  • Ability to forecast resource needs accurately and assign construction management teams to projects as they are approved.
  • Ability to manage all departmental financial reporting, including approving change orders, submitting monthly cash flow forecasts, and consolidating GC payment applications.
  • Excellent judgment and decision-making skills to address complex commercial and project-related issues in a timely manner.
  • Highly organized, process-oriented, and capable of leading multiple complex projects concurrently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong collaborative work style with the ability to work effectively across departments to ensure smooth project transitions.
