Job Description
A senior IP counsel role focused on managing and strategizing the company's patent and trademark portfolio, working closely with technical teams to identify patentable ideas, draft and file patent applications, and support the company's leadership in intellectual property matters related to autonomous vehicles and robotics.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with technical teams to harvest, document, and prepare patentable ideas and invention disclosures
- Draft, review, and file patent and trademark applications, managing the patent prosecution process
- Manage and update the company's IP portfolio, including trademarks and trade secrets
- Provide strategic advice to internal teams on IP protection and commercial IP matters
- Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure protection of innovative products and ideas
- Educate and assist inventors and teams in turning ideas into patent applications
- Coordinate with outside counsel for patent prosecution and IP strategy execution
Requirements
- A law degree and an engineering degree.
- 7 years of experience as a patent lawyer responsible for end-to-end drafting and filing.
- Experience working at an IP law firm or in-house, or both.
- Experience working across hardware, software, and services-related technologies.
- Experience with trademarks and trade secrets is a plus.
- A proven ability to draft and file patent applications in both the U.S. and internationally.
- Experience in taking ideas that may be only partially formed and drawing out the inventive step in that idea.
- A registered U.S. patent attorney and ideally a member of the California Bar; admission in other jurisdictions is a plus.
- Excellent legal instincts, engineering know-how, and business acumen.
- Strong technical skills and judgment in patent law and technical fields.
- Ability to work in fast-paced environments, juggling educating team members, helping inventors, and driving patent strategy.
- Highly organized with the ability to track and execute on multiple patent portfolio deadlines.
- Excellent written communication skills, capable of quickly producing polished patent drafts ready for filing.
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently and drive processes without bottlenecks.
- Ability to identify patentable ideas, including partially formed ideas, and spot opportunities to lead technological breakthroughs.
- Experience in collaborating cross-functionally with technical, business, and leadership teams.
- Passion for making a significant impact through work on innovative technologies.
