Job Description
The Safety Governance Standards Lead at Nuro is responsible for developing and leading the company's safety strategy, standards, and management systems for autonomous vehicle technologies, while managing safety teams and ensuring regulatory compliance and public trust.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop Nuro's safety vision, policies, and KPIs.
- Manage and improve the company's safety management system and safety assurance framework.
- Advise executive leadership on risk, compliance, and safety strategy.
- Interface with regulatory bodies, industry consortia, and safety certification agencies.
- Oversee safety case development and external safety communications.
- Implement safety strategies through cross-functional teams and ensure safety accountability.
- Foster a culture of safety, transparency, and continuous improvement across the organization.
- Stay current on emerging safety issues and provide guidance on industry standards and regulations.
- Represent Nuro in safety-related dialogues with regulators, industry bodies, and the media.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a technical or safety-related discipline
- 10 years of experience in safety for complex, high-reliability domains
- Demonstrated leadership in managing multidisciplinary safety teams for safety-critical systems such as autonomous vehicles, aviation, medical devices, etc.
- Expertise in safety standards, Safety Management System (SMS) design, and safety argumentation
- Technical experience, preferably with hands-on work in software, hardware, and operations
- Ability to develop, manage, and continuously improve the company-wide safety management system and safety assurance framework
- Ability to advise executive leadership on risk, compliance, and safety strategy
- Ability to interface with regulatory bodies, industry consortia, and safety certification agencies
- Ability to foster a culture of safety, transparency, and continuous improvement across the company
- Experience in establishing safety vision, policies, and KPIs, and leading safety strategy implementation through managers and safety responsible engineers
- Experience in reviewing and consulting on Safety Case components, including verification and validation (V&V), prior to preparation of the company-wide Safety Case
- Experience in establishing training and other requirements to improve safety education among safety responsible engineers and across the company
- Ability to play a key role in cross-functional safety organizations and activities governing product development, validation, and operation
- Experience in emergency planning and response
- Ability to stay current on emerging issues in safety and autonomy, and review and provide guidance on regulatory and industry standards
- Ability to represent the company in safety matters with legislators, regulators, industry standard setting bodies, and the media
- Strong communication skills to articulate safety vision and strategy to internal and external stakeholders
- Willingness to work in a collaborative environment and share expert advice and counsel
