Job Description
The Autonomous Vehicle Operator (AVO) is responsible for operating self-driving vehicles in various traffic conditions, collecting data, troubleshooting operational issues, and ensuring safety and proper vehicle maintenance, while supporting the development and training of autonomous driving technology.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate autonomous test vehicles in manual and autonomous modes under various traffic conditions
- Collect and provide detailed feedback on vehicle performance and software behavior to engineers
- Troubleshoot operational issues in real-time and collaborate with dispatch to resolve them
- Perform daily vehicle inspections and basic maintenance tasks
- Educate the public about autonomous vehicle technologies and behaviors
- Conduct high-profile ridealongs for company leadership and stakeholders while ensuring safety and professionalism
- Monitor onboard safety and navigational systems, maintaining situational awareness
Requirements
- Possess a current valid California driver’s license and have been in possession of a US license for at least 3 years.
- Have a clean driving record and be able to pass a criminal background check and drug test.
- Be able to reliably work 5 days a week on one of the following shifts: Morning 6:00am-2:30pm PT (Tue - Sat or Sun - Thu), Afternoon/Evening 2:00pm-10:30pm PT (Tue - Sat or Sun - Thu), or Overnight 10:00pm-6:30am PT (Wed - Sun).
- Be able to operate a vehicle in manual and autonomous mode for up to 8 hours per day in diverse traffic conditions while adhering to proper safety and operational driving procedures.
- Be able to pass a series of training checkpoints both in and out of the vehicle.
- Have the ability to perform daily vehicle inspection checks before and after missions.
- Be capable of performing basic vehicle maintenance tasks, including washing vehicles and putting air in tires.
- Be able to operate standard field equipment such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones for documentation, training, and real-time workflow procedures.
- Exhibit strong problem-solving skills by remaining calm and resourceful under pressure to troubleshoot operational issues.
- Have strong collaboration and time management skills, and be able to work independently or in small groups without direct supervision.
- Be self-driven, focused, goal-oriented, and adaptable to frequent changes and evolving conditions.
- Demonstrate a proven record of reliability, punctuality, and consistent attendance.
- Be physically capable of sitting for 3 to 4 hours at a time for up to 8 hours per day in an enclosed vehicle, with the ability to bend, squat, stretch, and lift up to 25 pounds regularly.
- Have the ability to perform side and up/down movement of the head, neck, back, and shoulders necessary to operate a vehicle safely.
- Be able to work in a vehicle that may brake, swerve, slow, or stop abruptly, and operate foot pedals and grasp with hands as required.
- Possess strong written and verbal communication skills, and be comfortable communicating through online collaboration platforms such as Slack and Google Meet.
