Job Description

The Solar Protection Controls Engineer Electrical Performance Engineer is responsible for analyzing, optimizing, and ensuring the reliability and safety of Nexamp's solar PV and BESS assets through electrical system analysis, protection scheme management, and data-driven performance improvements, collaborating with various teams to maximize asset performance and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own plant protection, controls, and compliance strategy by reviewing and coordinating protection settings and managing utility approvals.
  • Engage with utilities on grid-interaction issues, diagnose protection scheme misalignments, and negotiate solutions.
  • Evaluate and optimize protection schemes, breaker coordination, relay timing, and inverter control functions to improve system reliability and energy performance.
  • Partner with engineering to develop and maintain design standards, fleet consistency, and protection philosophies.
  • Analyze inverter logs, relay events, and waveform data to conduct root-cause investigations and recommend corrective actions.
  • Manage fleetwide monitoring and diagnostics by refining alert thresholds and escalation workflows.
  • Develop analytical models and diagnostic frameworks to identify system constraints and improvement opportunities.
  • Represent Performance Engineering in cross-functional initiatives and mentor junior analysts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 5 years of electrical engineering experience
  • 2 years of experience in solar and protection relays breakers, reclosers, power logic controllers, etc.
  • Professional Engineer in Electrical Engineering preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively communicating information, ideas, and perspectives with people inside and beyond your organization
  • Experience in showcasing initiative to make improvements to current work, processes, products, and services across the organization
  • Ability to ask appropriate questions, analyze data, identify the root causes of problems, and present creative solutions
  • Expertise in building strong internal and external relationships with customers and stakeholders, instilling trust and loyalty across the industry
