Job Description
The Lead Electrical Engineer at Nexamp is responsible for reviewing and designing photovoltaic and energy storage projects, providing technical expertise on electrical infrastructure, and supporting project development, construction, and operations to advance clean energy initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and approve PV and ESS project designs, including equipment shop drawings and system modeling.
- Manage scope of work for third-party electrical engineers and oversee technical studies such as protection coordination, power flow, and grounding analysis.
- Provide technical support throughout project lifecycle, including development, permitting, construction, and asset management.
- Ensure compliance of construction drawings with NEC and utility requirements, and interpret relevant codes and RFI responses.
- Review and analyze utility reports, system impact studies, and interconnection agreements.
- Witness and review testing procedures for medium and high voltage equipment, and develop mitigation plans for non-performance.
- Certify mechanical completion of projects and review relay test reports and RDB files.
- Lead research and implementation of new products, SOPs, and process improvements.
Requirements
- 10 years of electrical engineering experience
- 4 years of PV (photovoltaic) experience
- PE (Professional Engineer) certification
- Utility scale design and HV (high voltage) substation experience, preferred
- Familiarity with ETAP, SKM, or AmpCalc modeling software
- Experience with industry standard design codes such as National Electric Code (NEC), International Building Code (IBC), International Fire Code, National Electric Safety Code (NESC), and other industry standards
- Strong knowledge of electrical principles, including medium voltage distribution, protection system coordination, and relaying principles
- Experience in reviewing and specifying equipment shop drawings for switchgear, transformers, reclosers, and other major electrical equipment
- Ability to perform advanced electrical modeling in ETAP and AmpCalc to coordinate system protection, determine fault-duty ratings, calculate arc-flash hazards, and run step touch grounding analysis
- Experience managing scope of work for third-party electrical engineers including studies such as protection coordination, power flow, arc flash, step touch grounding analysis, PSCAD and PSSE modeling, and substation design
- Experience providing technical support throughout the entire project lifecycle including development, permitting, construction, and asset management phases
- Ability to review draft construction set drawings for compliance with Nexamp standards and NEC, and assist with code interpretation and RFIs
- Experience reviewing grounding studies and thermal ampacity studies
- Ability to review and analyze utility pre-screen reports, System Impact Studies, Interconnection Service Agreements, and utility negotiations
- Experience witnessing test procedures, reviewing relay test reports, and certifying mechanical completion of construction projects
- Experience developing mitigation plans for non-performance to establish safe operation
- Familiarity with RDB files and relay test reports
- Ability to lead new product research, implementation, and develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and lead process improvement initiatives
- Valid Driver’s License or ability to obtain one
- Ability to work as part of a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team with demonstrated leadership capability
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
- Ability to ask appropriate questions, analyze data, identify root causes of problems, and present creative solutions
- Experience in building strong internal and external relationships with customers and stakeholders
- Eagerness to develop an understanding of Nexamp’s operations and apply that knowledge to inform business decisions
