Job Description
The Lead Commissioning Engineer is responsible for overseeing the commissioning, testing, and performance validation of utility-scale renewable energy projects, including solar and energy storage systems, ensuring they meet technical, safety, and operational standards to support the company's clean energy deployment goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead commissioning of PV and Battery Energy Storage Systems from pre-energization to operational turnover.
- Troubleshoot electrical, protection, and SCADA communication issues during commissioning and early operations.
- Manage project commissioning schedules in coordination with various teams and contractors to meet milestones.
- Provide remote and field support for DAS, inverter, BESS, and SCADA commissioning and witness tests.
- Review and validate site performance, conduct performance testing, and troubleshoot underperformance issues.
- Design and oversee Data Acquisition System (DAS) and SCADA systems for renewable energy projects.
- Develop SCADA engineering standards and interpret telemetry and control requirements.
- Mentor and train junior team members and technicians to enhance their technical capabilities.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent education certification background.
- At least 7 years of experience designing and commissioning electrical power systems, or network design.
- At least 4 years of experience in renewables such as Solar, Wind, and Storage.
- Experience in controls engineering for utility-scale renewable hybrid energy, PV BESS, AC-coupled, and DC-coupled systems is preferred.
- Knowledge of inverter parameter setting procedures.
- Knowledge and experience with technical communications protocols Modbus TCP, DNP3.0, etc.
- Experience with controls software hardware platforms and communication standards such as MESA, Sunspec, etc.
- Working knowledge and hands-on experience with various relays, meters, SCADA Gateways, and Data Concentrators, with experience in programming RTACs preferred.
- Expertise in commissioning and resolving site technical issues, with proven success in independently troubleshooting challenging SCADA related technical issues.
- Ability to independently lead the commissioning of PV and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) from pre-energization through project operational turnover.
- Ability to act as a primary troubleshooting resource for the Commissioning Engineering and Field Commissioning teams, providing expert-level support on electrical, protection, and SCADA communications issues during commissioning and early operations.
- Ability to manage project commissioning schedules in partnership with Deployment, SCADA, Engineering, and external contractors, ensuring alignment with construction and interconnection milestones.
- Ability to review and validate site performance of assets once live, including managing or executing performance testing and troubleshooting underperformance.
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software.
- Knowledge of industry standard design codes and electrical engineering and relaying principles.
- Demonstrated experience in effectively communicating information, ideas, and perspectives with people inside and beyond the organization.
- Experience in making improvements to current work, processes, products, and services across the organization.
- Ability to ask appropriate questions, analyze data, identify root causes of problems, and present creative solutions.
- Experience in building strong internal and external relationships with customers and stakeholders, instilling trust and loyalty.
- Eagerness to develop an understanding of how Nexamp operates and apply that knowledge to inform business decisions.
