Job Description

The Utility Electrical Engineer II at New Leaf Energy is responsible for evaluating interconnection impacts, designing utility connection facilities, and supporting the development of renewable energy projects through technical analysis and collaboration with utility partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate utility impact studies for accuracy, design changes, and cost estimates
  • Assist project developers in evaluating potential PV sites and interconnection costs
  • Review interconnection drawings and application packages for compliance with utility standards and regulations
  • Manage technical aspects of the interconnection process for projects
  • Design interconnection facilities and system modifications in collaboration with utility engineers
  • Perform power systems modeling, including coordination and grounding studies
  • Participate in industry and state-level technical policy working groups
  • Attend field design meetings with utility companies
  • Provide training and guidance to internal engineering teams

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or relevant study required.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in power systems and electrical engineering.
  • Strong understanding of distribution system impacts associated with the interconnection of distributed energy resources (DER), as well as techniques for mitigating common distribution system impacts.
  • Experience sizing and specifying equipment rated for 480V - 46kV such as transformers, switching equipment, metering equipment, reclosers, direct transfer trip schemes, SCADA systems, switchgear, and protective relaying, as well as experience performing load calculations, short-circuit, and coordination studies.
  • Experience performing load calculations, short-circuit, and coordination studies.
  • Experience evaluating utility impact studies for accuracy, required design changes, and cost estimates.
  • Ability to review interconnection drawings and application packages for compliance with relevant utility standards and regulatory obligations.
  • Experience managing technical aspects of the interconnection process for projects.
  • Experience advocating for advancement in DER interconnection technical policy.
  • Ability to assist project developers in the evaluation of potential PV sites and provide estimates of interconnection costs.
  • Ability to evaluate power systems modeling including coordination studies and effective grounding studies, using software such as SKM, Aspen, or PSSe.
  • Experience attending field design meetings with relevant utility companies.
  • Ability to review proposed relaying and integration schemes and guide projects through acceptance testing.
  • Ability to work closely with internal stakeholders from interconnection, project development, and operations teams to evaluate potential PV sites and review proposed schemes.
  • Willingness to participate in industry and state-level technical policy working groups.
  • Excellent communication skills to explain all aspects of design philosophy and engineering standards.
  • Physical ability to participate in field design meetings and site evaluations as required.
