Job Description

The Engineering Director at Canonical leads and manages hardware enablement quality assurance and testing teams to ensure the stability and certification of Ubuntu across various hardware architectures, driving continuous improvement in Linux hardware support and certification processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage software engineering teams focused on hardware enablement quality assurance and testing.
  • Oversee the OEM QA Engineering team, including planning, quality strategy development, and testing activities.
  • Improve automated testing capabilities and execute manual and automated tests on Ubuntu Desktop and Core.
  • Identify, triage, and document bugs; suggest solutions to quality and reliability issues.
  • Establish and improve quality processes and continuous improvement projects.
  • Coordinate with development teams to build efficient automated testing frameworks.
  • Hire, develop, and retain engineering staff, including engineers and managers.
  • Set and measure progress against benchmarks for speed, quality, and efficiency.
  • Represent the product and quality initiatives to stakeholders, partners, and customers.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and leadership to align on strategy and execution.

Requirements

  • The candidate must have an outstanding Linux based software engineering track record, preferably with low-level embedded experience.
  • The candidate must have an undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative about their alternative chosen path.
  • The candidate must have confidence to respectfully speak up, exchange feedback, and share ideas without hesitation.
  • The candidate must have a track record of going above-and-beyond expectations to achieve outstanding results.
  • The candidate must have demonstrated leadership and a track record of developing and growing people.

  • The candidate must have professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
  • The candidate must have experience with Linux Debian or Ubuntu preferred.
  • The candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability.
  • The candidate must be appreciative of diversity, polite, and effective in a multi-cultural, multi-national organization.
  • The candidate must demonstrate professionalism in interacting with colleagues, partners, and community.
  • The candidate must be thoughtful and self-motivated.

  • The candidate must have the ability to travel internationally twice a year, for company events up to two weeks long.
