The Regional Design Director leads creative excellence and design quality across multiple offices within a specific geographic region, overseeing design innovation, team development, client engagement, and regional growth strategies to uphold the firm's Living-Centered Design ethos.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee and ensure design excellence and quality across the regional portfolio.
Lead regional efforts in securing awards, publications, and recognition for design work.
Represent the firm externally at regional events, conferences, and speaking engagements.
Partner with marketing and communications to build narratives and communicate regional design impact.
Lead client relationships by guiding innovative design concepts aligned with client goals and societal needs.
Lead design presentations emphasizing storytelling and client understanding.
Mentor and develop regional design teams, fostering collaboration, innovation, and growth.
Recruit, retain, and support the professional development of senior design leaders.
Ensure high-performance design teams across offices and fill talent gaps.
Contribute to regional and firm-wide strategic growth and business planning.
Align regional design initiatives with the firm’s overall impact and innovation goals.
Requirements
Bachelor's or master's degree in architecture required; Bachelor's or master's degree in architecture from an accredited program preferred.
Generally, at least 20 years of related experience in design leadership roles or equivalent is required.
A minimum of 3 years experience leading others in a design studio or design practice segment required.
Current US Architectural Registration preferred.
Design portfolio of significant built and unbuilt work demonstrating design ability.
Third party recognition of work as a lead or supporting designer by local, regional, or national design awards programs and recognized design publications or digital platforms is preferred.
Strong oral presentation and storytelling skills required.
Must be able to understand and execute business strategy.
Travel required for the role.
Ability to manage a diverse team of creatives in architecture and other disciplines spread across multiple offices, including hiring, design management, resource allocation, and mentorship.
Demonstrable design talent evidenced through a portfolio of significant work, with recognition from awards or publications.
Ability to communicate complex ideas, both business and design, in a compelling manner and to lead firm-wide meetings and events.
Professional acumen and maturity to communicate authentically and respectfully.
Ability to develop and implement regional growth strategies aligned with firm business goals, including achieving a minimum of 10% annual growth in the region.
Ability to lead and participate in strategic regional growth planning and business development initiatives.
Demonstrate innovative thinking and aptitude for developing innovative design solutions addressing societal, environmental, and community challenges.
Support a culture of collaboration, transparency, safety, and trust within the team and organization.
Support recruitment, retention, and growth of mid-career design talent to senior leadership roles.
Possess a passion for understanding and contributing to the firm's business and client needs, supporting design-led growth initiatives.
Ability to contribute to defining the firm's design brand through excellence in regional work.
Must be able to complete mandatory compliance training and adhere to internal policies and the firm's Code of Conduct.
