Job Description

The Regional Design Director leads creative excellence and design quality across multiple offices within a geographic region, overseeing design innovation, team development, client engagement, and regional growth strategies to uphold the firm's Living-Centered Design ethos.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and ensure design excellence and quality across the regional portfolio.
  • Lead regional efforts to achieve design awards, recognition, and publication opportunities.
  • Represent the firm externally at regional events, conferences, and speaking engagements.
  • Partner with marketing to communicate regional design impact and narratives.
  • Lead client engagements, developing innovative design concepts aligned with client goals and societal needs.
  • Manage and nurture a community of regional designers, fostering collaboration, innovation, and growth.
  • Recruit, retain, and mentor senior design leaders and build high-performance regional design teams.
  • Contribute to regional and firm-wide strategic growth plans and business development initiatives.
  • Align regional design goals with organizational objectives and support regional impact and growth targets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in architecture required; a degree from an accredited program is preferred.
  • Generally, at least 20 years of related experience in design leadership roles or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of 3 years experience leading others in a design studio or design practice segment is required.
  • Current US Architectural Registration is preferred.
  • Design portfolio of significant built and unbuilt work demonstrating design ability.
  • Third party recognition of your work as a lead or supporting design role by local, regional, or national design awards programs and recognized design publications or digital platforms is preferred.
  • Strong oral presentation and storytelling skills required.
  • Must be able to understand and execute business strategy.
  • Travel required for the role.
  • Ability to manage a diverse team of creatives in architecture and other disciplines spread across multiple offices, including hiring, design management, resource allocation, and mentorship.
  • Demonstrable design talent evidenced through a portfolio of significant work, with recognition from design awards or publications.
  • Excellent communication skills to convey complex ideas compellingly and to lead firm-wide meetings and events.
  • Professional acumen and maturity to communicate authentically and respectfully.
  • Ability to develop and implement regional growth strategies aligned with firm business goals, including supporting a minimum of 10% annual growth of the region.
  • Ability to lead and participate in strategic regional growth planning and business development initiatives.
  • Experience in fostering a collaborative, innovative, and entrepreneurial environment within design teams.
  • Ability to build and nurture high-performance design teams, promote mentorship, and develop future leaders.
  • Understanding of regional and firm business metrics and the ability to translate strategic frameworks into regional growth goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop innovative design solutions addressing societal, environmental, and community challenges.
  • Support a culture of collaboration, transparency, safety, and trust within the organization.
  • Ability to contribute to the firm’s strategic vision of being an innovative, impact-driven design firm.
  • Commitment to the firm’s Living-Centered Design ethos and ability to translate it into practice and culture.
  • Willingness to participate in external representation at regional events, conferences, and speaking engagements (3-5 venues annually).
  • Ability to lead design presentations emphasizing storytelling and client understanding.
  • Ability to communicate client goals and metrics effectively and demonstrate how design solutions add value.
  • Experience in recruiting, retaining, and growing mid-career design talent into senior leadership roles.
  • Ability to support and implement firm-wide initiatives related to design excellence, organizational transformation, and regional growth.
