Job Description
The Laboratory Project Director is a senior professional responsible for leading the planning, design, and management of laboratory and vivarium environments, ensuring scientific, operational, and regulatory requirements are met while coordinating cross-disciplinary teams and stakeholder engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead laboratory and vivarium planning teams and facilitate stakeholder meetings.
- Oversee integration of laboratory and vivarium requirements into design documents and coordination efforts.
- Serve as primary liaison between planning teams, architecture, and interiors teams.
- Provide expertise in laboratory workflows, equipment selection, space programming, and compliance standards.
- Review and validate design documents and project deliverables for scientific and operational alignment.
- Manage stakeholder expectations, drive consensus, and synthesize requirements with design elements.
- Develop project goals, work plans, and ensure design excellence, quality, budget, and schedule adherence.
- Establish and maintain a partnering relationship with clients, clarifying decision-making processes.
- Implement firm processes, standards, tools, and best practices to ensure quality and efficiency.
- Ensure statutory compliance and manage communication regarding design, construction, and project issues.
- Lead and coordinate team activities, provide mentorship, and foster a positive team environment.
- Facilitate key meetings, presentations, and status updates with clients and internal teams.
Requirements
- Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in laboratory and vivarium environments in general, and 10 years minimum with specific experience on Bio Pharma laboratories and vivarium, with proven subject matter expertise.
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree (Master’s preferred) in a relevant scientific, engineering, or architectural field.
- Comprehensive understanding of laboratory and vivarium design, operations, and regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrated experience leading large multi-disciplinary teams in complex laboratory and vivarium planning projects.
- Ability to travel to work in South San Francisco office full-time.
- Familiarity with MS Project, Deltek Project Planning, Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, and other data management software.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex scientific and technical concepts to non-experts.
- Advanced proficiency in laboratory and vivarium space planning, programming, and workflow optimization.
- Ability to develop and lead stakeholder meetings, manage stakeholder expectations, and drive consensus among diverse groups.
- Experience in reviewing and validating design documents, specifications, and project deliverables for alignment with scientific and operational needs.
- Ability to develop project goals and work plans to achieve design excellence, quality, budget, schedule, innovation, and profitability objectives.
- Experience in implementing process expectations, best practices, reference standards, tools, templates, and technology to achieve quality service delivery and team productivity.
- Ability to ensure statutory requirements for the project are met.
- Strong client and team leadership skills, including providing constructive feedback and mentoring team members.
- Ability to synthesize laboratory vivarium requirements with architectural and interior design elements.
- Experience in managing workload of team and coordinating team activities.
- Ability to facilitate key meetings and presentations, including regular status updates with clients, internal project teams, and firm leadership.
- Demonstrated strong business acumen, coordination, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated strong client and team leadership skills.
- Ability to anticipate potential issues and communicate effectively with clients and internal teams regarding design, construction, and other project issues.
- Knowledge of laboratory and vivarium workflows, equipment selection, space programming, and compliance standards.
- Current licensure or registration in the United States (preferred).
- LEED accreditation (preferred).
- PMP Certification (preferred).
