Job Description
The Staff Functional Safety Engineer at Aurora is responsible for performing safety analysis, developing safety concepts, and ensuring the safety of autonomous vehicle systems through fault management and compliance with safety standards, working collaboratively with cross-functional teams to address complex safety challenges in self-driving technology.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform safety analysis at all system levels to identify vulnerabilities.
- Derive safety requirements and safety goals from hazard analysis and risk assessments.
- Build and maintain functional and technical safety concepts for autonomous systems.
- Conduct failure modes, effects, and analysis (FMEA) and fault tree analysis (FTA).
- Create and manage safety requirements using requirement management tools.
- Develop and maintain processes related to functional safety and software quality.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define fault management strategies.
- Serve as safety subject matter expert in safety-critical design decisions.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree, Master of Science or PhD in Engineering or related discipline
- Minimum 7 years of experience working in functional safety, system safety, or safety engineering
- Experience performing Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
- Ability to demonstrate a proven track record of successfully working with large, complex teams in a results-driven environment
- Ability to perform implementation-agnostic safety analysis for complex designs
- Comfortable working with ambiguity and evolving priorities
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Working knowledge of ISO 26262
- Experience in performing safety analysis such as trade studies and statistical analysis to drive safety-critical design decisions
- Experience creating, maintaining, and managing safety requirements using a requirement management tool
- Ability to build and develop functional safety concepts and technical safety concepts for self-driving applications to satisfy safety goals
- Experience performing hazard analysis and risk assessment (HARA) and deriving Safety Goals and Fault Tolerance and Technical Integrity (FTTI)
- Experience with safety analysis techniques such as Failure Modes, Effects and Analysis (FMEA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
- Experience collaborating with software subject-matter-experts to build fault management concepts to detect, control, and mitigate faults

Compensation/salary range: $162,000 - $260,000 per year
