Job Description
This position involves leading field surveying activities, including various types of land surveys and construction staking, while managing equipment, ensuring quality standards, and mentoring team members in a construction or land development environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct instrument persons and complete various types of surveys including houseline, topographic, tree, wetland, boundary, ALTA, control, and construction staking surveys.
- Maintain accurate field notes, sketches, and data files; upload and download data and calibration files from survey equipment.
- Ensure proper maintenance and care of field equipment and vehicles.
- Coordinate with clients, staff, and site superintendents; communicate project status and scope changes.
- Mentor and train survey team members, including instrument persons, interns, engineers, and surveyors.
- Perform construction calculations and prepare CAD drawings for block sheets and record drawings.
- Review engineering plans for potential field issues and improve survey procedures and standards.
- Make independent decisions within project frameworks and ensure projects are completed efficiently and to quality standards.
Requirements
- Must have a High School Diploma and or Surveying Degree with 5-8 years minimum experience.
- Valid driver s license is required.
- Excellent oral and technical written communication skills are required.
- Ability to direct instrument persons and other field surveyors.
- Strong sense of urgency and self-initiative to meet client deadlines.
- Available to work overtime as needed to complete projects.
- Available to work in the field in all weather conditions.
- Desire to learn and improve field skills and survey knowledge.
- Ability to make independent decisions within the general framework of projects.
- Must be fluent in the English language.
- Perform work primarily outdoors at construction sites, landfills, and in traffic, often for extended periods in various terrains, climates, and adverse weather conditions.
- Must be able to perform moderately strenuous tasks, such as lifting and carrying survey equipment instruments weighing up to 75 pounds over rough terrain.
- Able to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, clear vegetation, dig holes, and pound stakes with hand tools.
- Able to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Able to use hands to finger, reach with hands and arms, or feel and talk or hear.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
