The Controller will lead the development and management of the company's accounting and financial operations, including establishing GAAP-compliant financial statements, implementing scalable financial systems, and overseeing internal controls, all within a high-growth clean energy startup environment.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and establish GAAP-compliant financial reporting framework and processes
Manage end-to-end monthly and year-end financial close processes
Oversee general ledger activities, reconciliations, and journal entries to ensure compliance and accuracy
Prepare schedules and coordinate with external auditors for annual audits
Streamline and manage corporate expenses, accounts payable, and payment processes
Design, select, and implement scalable financial and accounting systems
Establish and document internal controls, policies, and procedures
Drive process improvements and automation within the accounting function
Build, train, and manage a remote accounting team
Manage relationships with banks and financial institutions for cash flow and treasury functions
Coordinate with parent entity and affiliates to ensure consistent financial reporting and policies
Requirements
Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is required.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
At least 7 years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
At least 3 years of direct experience as a Controller or Assistant Controller or equivalent management role within the renewable energy sector.
Deep and demonstrated expertise in U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the ability to apply them to complex business issues.
Proven experience designing and implementing financial and accounting systems, including selecting and deploying robust and scalable financial systems such as ERP and general ledger systems.
Experience preparing GAAP-compliant financial statements, including footnotes and disclosures.
Experience managing the end-to-end monthly and year-end close process to ensure timely, accurate, and efficient financial reporting.
Overseeing all general ledger activity, reconciliations, and journal entries to ensure compliance with GAAP and tax regulations.
Ability to prepare all necessary schedules and serve as the main point of contact for external auditors to ensure a clean and efficient annual audit process.
Experience streamlining and managing corporate expenses, accounts payable, and payment processes, including implementing efficient vendor payment systems and overseeing employee expense reporting.
Proven ability to design, select, and implement financial and accounting systems (e.g., ERP, GL, integrated tools) to support company growth.
Establishment and documentation of internal controls, accounting policies, and standard operating procedures to safeguard assets and ensure data integrity.
Drive continuous process improvement and automation within the accounting function to accelerate the close cycle and enhance efficiency as the company scales.
Experience building, training, and managing a high-caliber remote accounting team, setting performance metrics, and fostering a culture of accountability and precision.
Manage relationships with banks and financial institutions, overseeing cash flow management, treasury functions, and debt covenant compliance.
Serve as the main finance point of contact for the parent entity family office and its affiliates, ensuring seamless collaboration and transparent reporting.
Proven success in navigating the financial challenges, rapid change, and operational constraints of a startup or early-stage company.
Experience leading and managing distributed or virtual accounting teams.
